if I rent from a dvc owner and for some reason have to cancel trip what happens. Do u lose money? Just trying to decide if we should book this way or book through Disney where u can pay as you go and cancel if need be. We are 4 families going so you never know what may happen

Booking directly through Disney is probably best in that circumstance.

You can get trip insurance for any DVC brokered point rental; you may just have to acquire it yourself. David's does not recommend a company (or take a cut).

Almost all DVC rentals are non refundable and nonchangeable due to the way points are used by the owner.
Private owners will often make reasonable changes but I agree that for most rentals one should expect to use or lose it.

You should assume it's non refundable. Depending on how the use year and points are aligned for the owner they could lose the points that they rented you if you cancel. So they are out the $$ and the points

Trip insurance while offering some protection isn't going to help with a plan change for the heck of it or that your work schedule changed, or just that life happened.

That's the risk involved in renting points. We're renting points for Poly in April and the price difference between booking through Disney and renting points is unbelievable. We're going with family and we are the only ones that felt comfortable enough to take the risk.

You can save money with a DVC rental but there are rules and/or policies. Contact the person that you are renting from for specifics.
