We were at VWL a two weeks ago. We had booked a 2 bedroom with points and were downsizing to a 1 bedroom(on borrowed points) on the last night of our trip as some family members headed home. The morning of our downsize, my father suddenly passed away, so we immediately changed flights and headed home. DVC told me that since they were borrowed, I had to use them before July 30th of this year-I have an August use year. If you purchase trip insurance through Disney would my timeline for use been longer?

On a side note-I called the front desk to let them know what had happened as soon as I found out about my dad, and they told me I had to come to the desk to officially cancel the reservation. I did that and then was told I had to call member services ASAP to let them know. I was on hold forever it seemed, crying, only to be told I didn't have to call them, that the points were already in holding! Disney did not make that day any easier on me-

minniestheone,
I am so sorry about the loss of your father. I would have thought the Disney system would have been more sympathic to you during this awful time. I don't know the answer to your questions... I sure hope you get to use the rest of your points conveniently to your schedule.

Praying for the best for you and your family during these more than difficult days.

I am so sorry for you loss, what an awful end to a Disney vacation.

The travel insurance that is available through Disney is an outside insurance company. It has no effect on points or point status, it simply would reimburse you for a specific amount (I think $5) per lost point. As to whether or not the insurance would consider borrowed points going into holding as "lost" is anyones guess, but it would not have extended your use window or allowed you to bank the points that were borrowed.

Sorry for your loss.

When we were there last year as we were waiting for ME to take us to the airport I received a call that my mother had passed.

It is tough to end a vacation that way.

Actually, it appears that MS did help you. Technically, if you cancel the day you are supposed to check in, you lose those points totally. If they allowed you to put them into holding, they at least allowed you the opportunity to still use them and not totally lose them. Unfortunately, you can't unborrow points once they have been borrowed.

It looks like MS allowed your once in a lifetime emergency save on your points.

Sorry for your loss...

I think Deb is right that Disney did allow something not usually allowed.

Hope you find peace in your future...
