Cancellations/Closings?

Not canceling or closing per se, but Chicago proper will be going to required full vaccination status, ages 5 and older, to get into a restaurant, bar, gym, entertainment where food or drinks are served (like movie theaters I presume) effective January 3ed.

NHL canceled participation in the Winter Olympics.

My mom wants us to take her to church on Christmas Eve. I looked on the website to see if they were limiting capacity. The place holds 1400 people and it's usually standing room at the 5:00 p.m. Christmas Eve mass. We usually get there before 4:30 just to get a seat. The website mentioned that masks are required and that families "should" maintain 6' of distance from others. It didn't say anything about limited capacity, or proof of vaccines or negative tests. I'm assuming that, as usual, everyone who shows up will be allowed to squeeze in. I told my mom I'm not completely comfortable with being that close to people for well over an hour, especially for her since she's 85 (despite the fact that we're all boosted). We're still discussing it and deciding what to do. They will be streaming the services online, so that might be a good compromise.
We aren’t going to mass either as we normally would with my 82 year old mom. Every Christmas Eve mass has about 1500+, standing room only. No mask or distancing requirements and like Disney you are supposed to “fill in all available space” About 20 % of people will wear masks.

I am noticing restaurants closing early for staffing issues. Went to chipotle the other day for dinner and there was a sign saying that they closed at 3pm. Couple of Dunkin donuts were closed for a week, I heard it was covid exposure and staffing issues.

Our AMC movie theater must be limiting capacity or something. We saw Spider Man today, and the website showed today (and yesterday when I checked,) and the rest of the week, with all of the seats on the far right/left as N/A and the 3-4 front rows as N/A for purchase. But at the movie today, they were not occupied. So idk, if the theater is just not selling those seats or what due to Covid. No idea, but it was odd. Great movie tho!

Here in England things aren’t closing per say, though many shows in London have had to be cancelled because of members of the cast testing positive for COVID. The government is massively speeding up booster jabs with the aim of avoiding any further restrictions. People are just getting fed up and disheartened with all of the uncertainty now. Many Hogmanay (New Year) parties have just been forced to be cancelled in Scotland. Provided the government doesn’t mandate closures, I don’t imagine we will be seeing many closures in England.

Texas is pretty much ignoring the whole thing. Not exactly a surprise.

Yep! Branson Missouri too! Just spent the past 3 days there and never had to wear a mask. Saw some shows and had a blast. Going to NYC next week for New Years and I know it will be drastically different there! Gonna have to track down some masks for that trip…

Same here in Tennessee. Nothing in Memphis seems limited, and our mask mandate is gone. Our daughters had tickets to their school winter formal two weeks ago. They sold their tickets day of to avoid maskless crowds at an event holding 1300 youth. By mid-late week the school reported a dozen covid cases in students.

Wonder if they don't have enough staff so they're trying to limit the amount they have to clean up.

I know nothing about New York. Other than my one change of planes in JFK Airport in 1976, I have never stepped foot in the state. NYC just doesn't sound like my cup of tea.

Sounds like you’re thinking that all of New York State is like NYC. Which it is not.

Very true!

The most stereotypical rednecks I have known were from NY. Parts of NY are more rural than rural parts of GA.

Same for SC. I haven’t heard of anything changing. It is possible, I guess, but not likely. I teach and we just had a Christmas program at our school with at least 1000 people packed into our activity center. 🙄 Maybe 30 masks in the whole place.

So a lot of the Broadway shows are taking cues from the west end in the UK. Quite a few cancelled and won’t be returning until New Years. They are doing the safest thing possible right now. And a few of them just did the “we will reopen between the 26th and 28th” approach to nip it in the bud.
The other thing with broadway you have to understand is that someone can test negative and then get injured during the show that night or have a family emergency or get something else (for example if they have a kid who gets strep throat they might get strep throat). So some of these shows are being as cautious as possible and realizing there are never enough understudies/standbys and swings to cover everyone who is out (btw huge shoutout to the understudies and standbys and swings!). They cannot shut down fully again or it will cease to exist. This is the only way until the pandemic becomes endemic.
I hope MSG reinstates the mask mandate before I see Elton in February. I was one of a few hundred out of thousands masked at Billy Joel in November. It was scary then even with no big variant.

Oh, I know. Other than changing planes at JFK, never had a reason or desire to go anywhere in New York.
