cancellation - what happens to the points

I had 200 points for 2010 and 160 for 2011 that I've used to make reservations in Jan 2012. However, the family we are going with have to cancel , and that isn't a time of year we'd ususally travel. If we cancel the reservation I think I have to use the 2010 point by Aug 2011 (Aug use year), but not sure if I can then bank the 2011 points to use in late 2011 or Spring 2012? anyone know the rules around cancellations?

I believe you had to borrow the 160 points from 2011 as the travel is during your 2010 use year so if you cancel you would have to use the 160 points by the end of July 2011 but the 2010 points could be banked into the 2011 use year and be used from Aug 2011-July 2012. This is expecting that you would cancel at least 30 days out.

You could even borrow the 2011 points to use for a reservation before Aug. 2011 if you cancel now.

This is correct. I think your experience at having guests back out is the best reason for never borrowing points to make reservations for guests who are flighty like that. We always make sure we have plenty of banking time if we use points to invite guests.
