Has anyone ever had to cancel a reservation due to deployment? It's a possibility that our son-in-law will get deployed before our February trip. Does anyone know if DVC will waive holding/60 day thing?

They might but you have up to 31 days in advance of check-in to cancel without points going into holding.

I would think if your son is the owner, that they would make every effort to make his points whole. If they are not his points, not so sure. But either way, thank him for his service!!!

Not exactly the same thing:
DD(Adult) was scheduled to go with us on a family cruise. The week before the cruise the war in Iraq started and her BiL was KIA. The funeral was scheduled for the week of the cruise. We had to cancel her out of our room. We had booked her cruise on DVC points, DCL & DVC refunded the points without restrictions once I provided proof.

The points are ours, not my s-in-law's. We don't want to cancel, because we aren't even sure he'll be deployed. He's in for another 5 years, so we don't want to put life on hold that long. Just was curious how Disney might handle this. We've never canceled before..IF he gets deployed, and we have to cancel, maybe they'll let us slide this one time? Thank you for all the replies.

I'm not seeing the cause-and-effect here. Why does his deployment mean you'd have to cancel? I don't think that would be a good enough reason to make an exception.

Because I'll have 2 studios (instead of 1) if he can still go. If he can't go, I'd need to cancel one of them.

Okay, I think you left that part out of the OP and we all made some assumptions. I didn't realize we were talking about cancelling one of two reservations, but rather thought we were talking about cancelling everyone's reservation. I figure that was part of @BillPA's point about the son being the owner. If the reservation is in the son's name and he's deployed and can't go, I bet they'll work with you to cancel the one room. Or, you could purchase trip insurance.

Why don't you call MS and ask them if you can't get a definitive answer here. They will know for sure and no more wondering. You could email or chat them.

I suspect the official DVC answer would be "that's what trip insurance is for." I wouldn't depend on magic in this case, there are lots of military families that own DVC, and if they start refunding points for deployment as a policy, the system will break since those points will get "used" twice. The rules on holding points and banking and borrowing are there so everyone has the opportunity to use their points.

Actually with what Disney does for the Military I don't think there would be a problem. IMO I think it will be fine. Points will not be used twice, that is ludicris, and I for one don't care if there is one exception or 100 exceptions made for the Military.

They will be using them twice if Disney can't rebook the room on points because its short notice. And if we end up escalating, there will be a lot of vacation cancellations. DVC has very little give in its occupancy.

I'd email so you have a record. If a member is deployed and has to cancel directly for that reason, I'd suspect they would cancel AND waive any restrictions like holding and banking for a formal deployment with orders. I'm pretty sure I've seen reports of similar situations here on DIS historically. But there may be no way to be certain a given answer will be applicable in the future.
