Cancellation and lost placeholder?

So, our cruise departure date is this Saturday on the Fantasy. I just got off the phone with Costco to cancel. Yes, this was a family emergency, daughter in the hospital kind of situation. She is ok but will be in the ICU for another 5-6 days. Yes, luckily we have travel insurance to cover what we lost. We always book a placeholder while onboard and of course were just told on the phone that there are no exceptions, they would not allow us to book a placeholder even though they are still getting all the money from our cruise.

Is there anything else we can do? I hate to lose that benefit.

Sadly, I doubt it. It's not whether they got your money or not. It's whether you are actually onboard for booking an onboard placeholder.

Placeholders are booked onboard through the app. If you're not onboard then you can't book. I get your rationale but that's not how placeholders work.

First I hope your daughter is okay and recovers quickly.
Second did you ask if you could speak to a manager. Sometimes they may have a little leeway.
Explain what is going on with your family situation. They may need a note from your physician as to what the situation is, and your daughter won't be home and recovered till after the sail date.

That is kind of what I was thinking and hoped someone else might have had a similar situation. I had to call Costo since they were the TA but I think I will call back Disney and see if I can appeal to their desire to give us a "magical" day. Daughter will be ok, but has skull fractures and I am typing this as I sit next to her bed in the ICU.

I really hope she is OK. Sorry to hear about this and that you had to cancel your cruise. I hope the placeholder works out.

Family first, however, with that said have a few future cruise dates in mind. They may be more likely to work with you if you are willing to re book a future date to go on a cruise.

Hoping for a speedy recovery for your daughter.

So sorry about your daughter -- I hope all turns out well and she recovers easily.

I would contact DCL and plead your case. The standard answer is that the placeholder is lost once the cruise is cancelled. But they do have ability to bend those rules in special circumstances. It may be worth a try. Or maybe take a quick 3-night cruise on a *GT once she recovers, then book another placeholder to plan a longer cruise in the future.

I think OP was asking about booking a placeholder while onboard, and since they aren't taking the cruise, since DCL has their money, can they still book a placeholder. Not that the cancelled cruise was a placeholder booking that they'd still like to keep.

Unfortunately, I do not have a good answer for you, but I hope your DD has a quick and easy recovery.
