Well gas in Michigan just went to $3.00 today. Just curious if anyone that is traveling a far distance is starting to rethink their vacation plans.

We went to $2.99 this morning. I rethinking my working and errands. Boy this really stinks. I think we are going to have to buy a car.

It's too late (emotionally) to cancel - I worked too hard for our 10-day Christmas ressie. :guilty: That being said, when I compared going in our camper vs. flying, I used $ 3.00/gallon as the point - and 18/mpg, based on our "local" (~100 mi.) camping trips. Unfortunately, we drove to Williamsburg last week, and the fill-ups were more frequent (and much more expensive) than I originally imagined - I think we got around 12 mpg. :earseek: If gas goes to $ 4.00 or $ 5.00/gallon, we "may" have to cut the trip short by a few days or consider shorter MYW tix and eat in the resorts rather than the parks - or drop the dining plan altogether.

I look at gas as just one more vacation expense factored into the budget. At least with camping we have the option of eating at the TT to cut corners if we want. I don't know if the airlines are still doing it, but they have in the past added a fuel surcharge onto ticket prices, so don't forget to add that in when comparing the cost of flying vs. driving.

every $1.00 per gallon increase in gas means another $400. added to our vacation budget. We get 8MPG and drive 3000 miles. I round the figure up by 25 gallons, just in case, to 400 gallons.

We're not cancelling yet. As long as we still have a job to go to and our budget is balanced.......we're going.

Yes eating meals at the site is a option to cut corners if we choose. We get 8-9 miles to the gallon when pulling our 5th wheel and drive app. 1200 miles one way. I guess I just got used to lower gas prices.

I get 12.5 mpg with my diesel pulling a 30' 5th wheel. It's 1242 miles from my house in TX to FW. At $3.00 per gallon that comes to $596 for the towing. If it was still at $2.30 per gallon the cost would be $457. $140 difference. That's not going to keep me home.

we are still going! We have already purchased our MNSSHP tickets. Non refundable. :rolleyes1 The park tickets I purchased have no expiration dates, (Dh's Idea this time :wizard: )I have been saving since last year, this is our major family vacation. Both grandma's are coming along this trip so Dh and I can enjoy the Food&Wine fest. ;) We eat the majority of our meals in the camper so we save there. The only other expense, will be staying in the hotels one night on the way down and back. With the grandma's along we have the extra bonus of Military discount and AARP. :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Boy try a dollar a litre plus which works out to 4.00 plus a gallon. We drive to Disney every year we will be pulling a new TT/hybrid next time with a new Chev avalanche and can't wait. So no gas prices are just another thing to pay for no matter how much it is.

in our local trips........we have decided to camp locally this fall instead of
going to our upstate trips.....besides, the beaches on Long Island are sooooo
fine.. in the fall.....and YES.......some stations have hit the 3.00 here as well.......today, hiked to my local mall (you know how I like to walk anyway, Diane) so feel good about that........
We feel we will keep our reservations at the Fort for Jan and Feb...perhaps
eliminate the Keys following FW if prices continue.......
but, if there is ANY threat of shortage at the time we travel....will cancel
FW for sure.....just heard that there is some rationing going on in Fl today......
yikes..........this REALLY SUCKS...........

A little over $3 a gallon is the "tipping point" for us on the Christmas trip. I use about 110 gallons each way and at that point its a budget killer. Fuel plus Paying the holiday rates for FW campsite is going to make for an expensive trip.
Considering I havent had a raise in 3yrs or a contract for the last 2yrs it aint lookin good.
We had hope to go to VA this summer but dropped that plan when fuel got over $2.25 gal.
Its having a real impact on the people I know.

We don't intend on changing anything but I have to say, if there was ever a year for us to of "splurged" and decide to stay in a cabin instead of towing the camper, I am SO GLAD that this was the year. ;) I felt a bit guilty when I saw how much more 2 weeks in the cabin are (even with the great discount I got :teeth: ) compared to a preferred campsite. The cost of gas would of really killed us bringing the camper. :rolleyes1 SOMETHING really needs to be done about this whole mess!! :badpc:

We have not booked yet but I am still not sure if I am going to. We were thinking about a late January trip but now I dont know. Maybe by then it will settle down a bit

Well, gas topped 3 bucks a gallon here this morning. I have decided to double the amount we budgeted for gas on our April trip for our October trip. Still going, though.

We are going the 2nd week of October for two weeks--6 days at Beach Club Villas via DVC and the rest at FW. I estmate the increase in cost for our trip 1600 mile round trip will be about about $60 when comparing $2.50 to $3.00. If my math is correct. I get about 18 mpg towing my Trail Manor. Besides, by the 2nd week of October I fully expect the price to decrease some. I may be dreaming but every year for as long as I can remember the gas price falls after Labor Day. This year may be the exception to the trend.

I think you are right about a decline after Labor Day. We are probably seeing a more dramatic increase than normal because of the combined effect of the Hurricane and Labor Day weekend.

I am going on Monday. So far I don't mind the price too much as long as I can find it.

Our trip isn't until May, so I have time to wait it out before I start sweating. So far our budget is ~$1130 for fuel, and that is estimated at $3.25 per gallon for diesel. Depending on how things go, I may be way off one way or another. The breaking point for me when we would definitely cancel would be $4.00/gallon if it were for whatever reason that high in May.

If this were a shorter trip (we are going for 2 weeks) or if we went more frequently, I would buckle at a lower price, but we have been planning this since the beginning of this year and don't plan on going back again for a few years. :earsboy:

Well, we're definitely going in January, b/c I signed up to do the Goofy Challenge at the marathon. So I'm not training my rear off and then not going.

But, we have a trip planned for the end of Sept. that may get cancelled. We'll see how it shakes out. Since we booked "room only", we have until 5 days out to decide. With the MH, gas is really going to be an issue.

What we might do though, is go but not buy tickets (we were going to get AP's or 10 day MYW and use them again in Jan.). We may just hang around the fort, downtown disney, etc. We'll still get some Disney fun, but save some money and just buy tickets in Jan. for the length of time we'll need. We were also going to get MNSSHP tix but I think we'll wait and, if we go, hope that we can purchase some at the gates rather than preordering and losing the $$ if we decide not to go. I'm thinking that since we'll be there early in Oct., maybe those MNSSHP's won't sell out like they will later in the month.

If it gets worse or not much better, we'll cancel, but if things shake out OK, we'll go and just adjust our plans and budget accordingly.

At this point, we're still hoping to be able to make our trip to FW cabins in mid-Oct (personal problems are part of this as well as the problems cause by Katrina!) . We're not pulling a camper, but we're driving from New England. The cost of the drive is still cheaper than flying, and we're hoping by Oct. gas will be availble again...If gas won't be available on I-95, then we'll have to re-think. :sad2:
