cancel question

If you haven't passed your banking deadline you can cancel and bank them. What's your use year?

Wait...Uh oh. You are within 30 days. Your points will go into holding at this point.

I need to cancel my October 8th reservation. What will happen to my points?

They will go into holding, which means they will only be good for a reservation 60 days or less before arrival date and expire at the end of your use year.

I would explain the reason to member services, they sometimes make one time exceptions for health reasons, deaths, etc.

The other replies are correct. The points will go into a holding account, which restrict how they are used.

I've had holding points in the past and since I wasn't going to use them, had to rent them out on short notice and at a discounted price (about $8 instead of $10-11) to keep from just letting them go away.

You can always used them yourself, if you can re-scheduled before expiration.

Who would I need to talk to? I booked a room for my best friend and her parents and they were supposed to check in on Friday. Unfortunately her mother was rushed to the hospital today because she was having a stroke. When I called up member services, I told them the story and they told me all the could do for me was put the points in holding. My friend is willing to provide a Dr's note if they need it and my use year is in Feb so there isn't a lot of time left. It would be nice if I had a little more flexibility to rebook their trip ( after her Mom has recovered.)

It's not a given. My mother passed away a few days before a trip (she was to go with us) and our points were placed in holding.

Same here. My mom's funeral was the day we were supposed to arrive at WDW and my points went into holding.

They may not give the exception because the reservation was not for yourself.

My condolences to you guys on the loss of you mothers. I am surprised that they didn't make an exception for you guys.
I did send an email to member services so we will see what they say. If not, I guess I will just have to use wait lists and harass them everyday to put a trip together for her. LOL

It may seem unsympathetic but the rule is in place due to the relative scarcity of new reservations within 30 days. If the cancellation had occurred 4 months ago or 6 months ago, there is a very high probability another member would have stepped-in to fill the void. At less than 30 days, the odds of that room being filled by another are relatively slim.

The Holding rule grants some ability to use the points, but only for a period / resort when demand is similarly low.

Travel insurance is always available to help mitigate these risks. Those who choose not to purchase insurance are assuming the risk, knowing that the trip could be scuttled if any number of issues arise at the last minute.

That may be the reason but it doesn't make sense. I've been on the site seeing when we could possibly reschedule and the only time I can find more then 2 days in a row is the last week in January, which may be gone by the time the 60 days comes around. Also from the sound of some of the posts on the boards, it doesn't sound like DVC is having that much trouble filling rooms.

Not from October 1 to mid-January. Those are the busiest times for DVC. DVC should be 96-97% occupied all the time.

As your reservations falls duriing a very popular DVC time, you could perhaps try to rent the existing reservation.

I am the more seasoned DVC owners could provide pro and cons to this idea.

My personal view is that DVC is too big for exceptions. That's why there are rules, so you don't have to weigh each situation and make different decisions one time to the next. I realize there are unique situations but personal circumstances really aren't unique. The unique circumstances I can think of are when there are issues on the resort side where part or all of the resort will be closed unexpectedly and for multiple contracts of a single owner. The problem DVC has is that they have made allowance for such situations in the past so no one really knows what to expect when something happens.

Problem starts with the reservation being cancelled. You're looking at canceling dates which are only 2 weeks out. What are the odds that another DVC member is willing to fill that void on just 2 weeks' notice?

The closer to arrival date a cancellation occurs, the greater the odds that the room will just sit vacant because no member is willing to schedule around such a short notice trip.

Some cutoff point & penalty system is necessary to discourage members from locking-up rooms beyond the point where they are appealing to the masses.

You do have approx 1 week left during which you could use the points to trade to a non-DVC resort. There may be better availability at one of the moderates or Poly, Yacht Club or GF. Unfortunaly it is more points and the $95 fee but it's another option. I'd guess the difficult part about that is that it's unknow when the family would be able to travel again and the fee makes any changes more prohibitive.

Otherwise, I'd recommend selecting a time that doesn't include the 1st week of Dec or any holidays or the marathon weekend and waitlisting at SSR and AKV. And keep checking online. I think you'll find something before Feb 1st.

I'm actually surprised you can't find something for Jan - I just recently booked the last couple of days of Jan and the first week of Feb. and had tons of choices for both 2BR's and studios.

I hope no one thought I was upset or pissed off. Quite the contrary. I know the policy but figure it doesn't hurt to ask. Although I am surprised that the death of a parent doesn't qualify but c'est la vie!

There is some availability after Jan 20 and that might be the dates we book. I'm just afraid that is too close to my use year if by some chance those dates become unavailable by the time I'm allowed to book. But I know how the waitlist game works and if I have to get the vacation one day at a time, I am wiling to do that. It's the least I can do for them :)
