Why don't you get a quote from car-on-the-drive and then make a final decision after surgery on Tuesday? Hopefully your surgeon will be able to give you advice. I am just like your DW and I would cope better if I thought that I wouldn't have to drive after a long flight on motorways.

As I wake up on the sofa because I can't comfortably lie down and the pain kicks in because the painkillers have worn off and the heartburn bubbles and burns from so many tablets I know I have to cancel.

By the time we go I'll have two casts one of which will cover 3 week old stitches, I can't believe the hospital won't want to see me at least fortnightly.

I'll just have to deal with the losses insurance won't cover.

Maybe a week in Mallorca or Paris?

Don't worry, I'm not feeling sorry for myself, we've been so lucky to go once or twice a year for a long time, maybe a year off is a good thing. I was really looking forward to our first ever cruise though, kids are going to be gutted!

Is there any way someone on the forums can benefit from my Disney Dream booking? We only paid £1400 for a 3 night in a deluxe family cat 4D for a family of 4 which looking at recent prices is pretty good. Can I sell the booking on or is it as simple as letting you all know when I cancel so you can snap the room up? Doubt it but worth a try.

I am so sorry that you are going to have to cancel, but it does look like a logistical nightmare. For what it's worth I think that you're making the right decision! As a nurse my main concern is for your health! I don't want to be negative, but it's possible that you could have other problems as a result of the injuries, surgery and taking the painkillers. You already mentioned that you're getting heartburn because of the painkillers. Just as an aside if your taking Ibuprofen please don't take it on an empty stomach and if the heartburn etc gets worse go and see your GP (can you tell I'm an Endoscopy nurse! ) At least once you've decided what your going to do, you can start making plans for later in the year or for next year. I know that it must be gutting to have to think about cancelling at this late stage, but I do think two weeks without all the hassle and possible pain etc. will be much more enjoyable for everyone!

I would agree that cancelling and rebooking (even if it is less time) for next year when you all will be able to fully enjoy it is the only sensible option. I can imagine how gutted you are but you don't want 4 weeks of frustration and pain - that won't be fun for anyone.

Re your wife having a job by christmas / next year - has she actually got one lined up or will she be looking for a job? I'm asking because if she is looking now and is offered something then I'm sure they would honour the leave if it is all booked in advance. Might have to take it as unpaid tho....

Can you cancel the villa and stay on site?? That way you could take Disney transportation all the way and the driving becomes a non-issue.

We could stay onsite but at this stage the cost is massive compared to the villa option.

I've just put in for a car on the drive quote as DW is adamant she could give it a go. The light of day has brought more optimism with it lol.

You know what might work?? Driving to the same central place each day-- say, the TTC or DTD, and bussing from there. Your wife would only have to learn one route.

Yes, it would be less convenient. But I bet she'll be a lot more comfortable.

Or that could be your plan in the beginning. Then, as her comfort grows, you could expand a bit.

If you do decide to travel, I would recommend spending the first night close to the airport. Book a hotel with a shuttle service which then takes you back to the airport the next morning.
Picking up a hire-car when you are well rested is so much easier and with jet-lag you can be up and out on the roads before they get busy. You should be able to check in early as you had anyhow paid from the previous day.

If it were me, I would do anything rather than cancel, even if it were not quite the planned vacation.

But, you definitely need to take your doctor´s advice.

Hi again, before you start to go through all the pros and cons of still going check with your insurers that they will still cover you esp for the cruise part (as they are often more strict about the conditions for going on these). The descion may infact be made for you if they will not cover you on the cruise esp for any further treament to the arm). As an aside I sold tickets for disney on ebay with no problems at all esp easy if you already have a good rating and are willing to have them collected at your address as well as post. You may not even loose out much money as tickets have now gone up in price. But if you are still going back then just look at it as something you don't have to buy next time round. Hope the pain dies down soon.

Personally there is no way that we would cancel, but that's just us.

I've done all the driving every time we've been and do the lions share of the driving at home too, but this isn't just my holiday and just because I couldn't drive there is no chance that I'd cancel. Stella has always taken her DL to cover any emergencies and would drive if she had to. The main reason I do all the driving is to keep her from getting behind the wheel, because I know that once she tries it I'll never get a look in again. Once your missus has got over the shock of driving for the first few times she'll wonder why she's never done it before. I'm sure that even if she didn't get to like it she'd much rather have this holiday that has been planned for and worked into your lives, than have a compromise holiday in a few months or next year.

I know that you have to make your own minds up, but I just thought I'd give you my take on the situation.

We're still tooing and froing at the moment. Both of us say we know deep down we "should" cancel but neither of us want to. Here's my notes list of stuff I can and can't do to help put it in perspective!

Apart from wet rides / pools, would you really be unable to take part in other activities? Plenty of disabled travellers visit WDW every day, and I'm assuming that few rides would be 'off-limits' for them. I would be loathe to cancel but as a previous poster said, the decision might not be yours to make, depending on your insurer/surgeon. I really hope it all works out for the best.

as much as my heart says go, my head says your wife will be shattered. For everything you can't do adds to the list of things she has to do...in the heat. I'm sure its something you've considered and she'll say its fine, but would it not be better to go for maybe less time but when you could both be properly involved. Plus, water parks...how many kids and how old are they? would she cope? I mean of course she'd cope and not let any harm come to them but if they both want in water at once it could be over-whelming for her. How would she manage at airport pushing trolley with luggage and a buggy if one of the kids was tired (depends again on age of kids, just thinking of scenarios in which you'd prob feel a bit emmmm how to say it without offending....useless...not in a bad way but just thinking how my dh would be)

Don't worry, they are all the things we're discussing now. We're not waterpark people but there is still a lot she'd have to take on that I would normally do.

The big thing that is swaying us towards going is she'll have to do those things regardless of location, I'm being pretty useless here, she's having to help me with toilets as a horribly graphic example. So our attitude is why not be in the happiest place on Earth rather than rainy old Manchester while she's doing everything. It now depends on three things, how well the surgery goes (she's a bit worried I won't even wake up, bless), will the in-laws come (don't think we could cope without them) and can we limit driving to short routes.

I think we'll decide after Tuesday. It's been a great help "talking" about it though, thanks everyone.

Not yet, need to speak to someone onshore on Monday but worst case I've found a specialist insurer for broken bones believe it or not and the cost is minimal so don't anticipate insurance being an obstacle.

I get what you're saying about the extra work which is why we would invite the inlaws as well. We'll see. Get through Tuesday first.

If I could realistically postpone this year I would, postponing to next year is the same as cancelling as we'd go next year anyway. It's our only treat, we don't particularly have pricey hobbies, don't care for sport and don't go out much, our annual trip is what we look forward to.

I have been reading your posts - and just wanted to say how awful.

Whilst not an injury, we were faced with cancelling our trip last year due to my redudancy. My ex employers gave me the money to pay for the balance but I could not bring myself to do it until I knew I had a new job. It is always difficult to then get a new job when you want two weeks off straight away for a holiday too!

I held out till the last possible moment and secured a new job just 4 days before the balance was due - so we made it to Florida - albeit with depleted spending funds as money was tight (but as this was at the same time as CCE went under I felt I was in the same boat as many and we would make do)

You should see what happpens on Tuesday and take it from there. Also as you are going for 4 weeks at least you can take the trip at a more leisurly pace.

I'm really sorry to hear about your plight, that's awful!

On the driving point, although it probably is more convenient to have a car with two small kiddies, my partner and I don't drive and are taking the bus up and down between the parks. Check out the Lynx service to see what goes by your villa?

Best of luck looking for flights for Grandma - sounds like that would solve a few logistical issues!
