Canadians Traveling to the USA in 2025

The financial talk is starting on the US news channels. From what I've heard I think the effects will start being felt by the average consumer in the next few weeks. I know the tourist hot spots in the northeast are feeling the lack of Canadian travellers already. Next winter (if nothing changes) Florida and Arizona will really feel the lack of snowbirds.

It will take pressure from the outside (tourists) and pressure from the inside (the American people) to bring about change.

We’re not doing any US trips, and we’ve also decided to try and avoid our pre/post cruise stays too. For our Christmas cruise we’re heading to the Mediterranean instead of the Caribbean.

A family member who normally goes for a week before the cruise out of FL just stayed one night, arrived late evening and basically stayed at a cheap hotel and had dinner and waited to eat the next day until on the ship Lol. Spend as little as humanly possible when normally spends

That's actually what I'm doing when I cruise next week. We end up in Boston. To minimize US spend we're eating before getting off the ship and taking public transit to get to the airport. Spend in the US will be less than $10.

Don't forget port taxes and fees. Those count as spending in the US as well.

Well, that we can't do anything about if the cruise ends/begins in the US. My plan for next spring is the same as above-breakfast before we go, we'll use the cruiseship transfer, and get on a plane to come home. (Cruise starts in South America). Our cruise in the fall is an Athens to Athens cruise, so not affected.

We are still planning to go to Universal in Feb 2026. We haven't booked anything yet, but it's definitely our trip for next year since I am using air miles to fund the entire thing LOL (passes, air, resort). Just waiting for air miles to get tickets for 2026 in stock.

Read an interesting op Ed in the Toronto Star - a negative side affect of Canadians not going to the US is Canadians talking to Americans. The less Americans talk to people from other countries the less they understand other points of view.

Also American trips to Canada is down 10% so that is a negative for the Canadian Travel industry.

Hopefully offset by the increase in EU and other travelers (and Canadians ). I've run into a lot of people from the EU. More than I'm used to.

Sounds like a good plan! I think port fees go to country the port is in. On DCL port fees are included in the cruise price.

We don't have any US specific trips but we do have 6 cruises booked between Jun 2025 and Mar 2027 that leave from the US. We fly in the day before, but we're not the type to spend lots as we stay in more reasonable hotels and just spend what we need to for any meals pre cruise. Not planning on cancelling unless he puts in a rule to not allow us to come there anymore (who knows with him). The way I look at it, why let him ruin our family fun.

Unfortunately it’s not the best time for international visits. Even if you’re not heavily involved in politics, the impacts are felt by everyone.

Sure. Strangers. But aligned in our patriotic views as Canadians when someone is trying to wreak havoc on the economy of the country you are living in.

Hardly dictated by many here. People are sharing views but that's fine if you don't care one way or the other. I hope the views here are more of encouragement to consider how to fight back against these policies that are damaging to hundreds of thousands and indirectly do impact all Canadians.

Where are you getting exchange at par? That would be tempting... CAD has finally risen a smidge, around $.69 with exchange fees today which is better, but still not near par.

It is primarily northern states that are accepting the Canadian dollar at par for some hotels, restaurants, and attractions.

For example:

Seattle businesses accept Canadian cash at par to lure Blue Jays fans

California offers Canadians 25% off hotel stays amid border tensions

Upstate N.Y. tourism operators offering discounts to win back Canadians

Another good example is the discount being offered for Canadians who purchase Disneyland or Disney World tickets.
