just joined last year in Nov. bought some more in Apr. finally made our first reservation last night for November during Food and Wine. I am curious if some of my fellow Canadian DVC members from Southern Ontario could help me with a conflict I am having with my spouse. Being just an 'apprentice' I am still a little conscious about spending money. I am hoping that someone can enlighten me....is it better to fly or drive when we are only considering a week long vacation.

PS I do love to drive and have done it many times!

Thanks to my fellow Canadians for your advice

Well.... were not from Canada but just across the lake in Rochester. It would be a 20 hour drive for us. I can't imagine doing the drive. It would eat up 3-4 days of your 8 day trip. I have read of some Canadians driving to Buffalo and flying out of their using a Southwest direct flight.

there's lots of crazy Canucks that will do the 20 hour drive - straight through:)

*the things we do to get to WDW...shaking her head...* We're tossing around the possibility of a 38 hour drive :earseek: :earseek:

You'll need Dave Hunter's book, "Along I75", and depending on what you drive...anywhere from $300-500 in gas and tolls, there and back...and flights from Buffalo - excellent!

I've learned so much from those Upper Canadians;)

Come on over to the Canadian Board:) We'd love to meet you - welcome to the Dis!! and Welcome Home, Neighbour!!

:sunny:

If you are only going for a week then I don't think driving is the way to go - you'll either push yourself and then be exhausted or you'll use up too much time on the road. I'm from Buffalo and many Canadians do fly out from here. Lisa is right, Southwest has direct flights and USAir does too. A little over 2 hours on a plane beats a few days of driving! If you are only comparing airfare to the cost of gas then I guess driving would come out ahead but you should also think about the value of your time and how much you would be using up by driving.

Whoa!!! 38 hours!!! you guys are crazy Canucks (that's how you spell it!)! Definately out of our league.

We just drove in May and it was for only a week long trip but we love the drive and can't see ourselves flying anytime soon. Even our kids love the drive we just do the I75 drive and it takes about 20 hours and the best part is no matter how short the holiday it is still at Disney so the drive is always worth it. I just can't bring myself to pay for flights even cheap ones from Buffalo on SWA for a family of 5 it is cheaper for us to drive. How we do it is have a Sunday check in then leave Friday night and drive till Valdosta at the bottom of Georgia and stop for the night it is about 3PM on Sat we stay at teh fairfield inn 46 bucs for the night with the roomsavers coupon. We then head out at 9 AM Sunday morning and arrive around lunch time and have the rest of Sunday to strollaround go grocery shopping and do most of our other shopping before a week at the parks.

We drove in May. It was about 21 horus of actual driving. We actually enjoyed the drive a lot. Lots of time for me to shop. We spent about $280 USD in gas, another $50 on a hotel room and then a few meals. But for us the vacation started when we pulled away from our driveway so we enjoyed it rather than saw it as a chore.

We visited OKW/WDW last October. Drove from outside of Buffalo to Pooler, GA first night (new Red Roof Inn - $45) then drove the next day into OKW. On the way back we stopped in HHI for three nights.

Thanks everyone for all the good suggestions. Great to have access to all the expertise. Sure makes sense to take a long drive the first day and then have just a morning drive to complete the next day. We are used to driving north to the cottage from Southern Ontario and this last leg would feel like that shorter drive.

We also have done the short stay in HH on the way home. It's especially nice if you've been staying in a studio in Orlando and you treat to the one bedroom in HH. Can stretch out, get some laundry done and arrive home relaxed!

We used to always drive from Toronto. Now I live in Massachusetts and we still drive. It actually takes the same amount of time..about 23 hours.

Just out of curiousity, where in northern ontario is your cottage?

We are fortunate enough to be able to vacation in the summer months about 45 minutes north west of Huntsville near the town of Magnetawan, Ontario.
Better known as Gods country!!
