I want to use my phone for data when in CA but the plans offered in my market are ridiculous for roaming. If I come down with a "cracked" phone, is it possible to pick up a SIM card so I can text and access the web? I have no idea how to even google this question so any suggestions to push me in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Check out Roam Mobility. http://www.roammobility.com/

You can purchase a SIM card in Canada in stores such as London Drugs (if you're in the west) Staples and 7-11, or you can order through their website. You put the Sim into your unlocked phone and you sign up online for their talk, text or data plans for as many days as you need. You get a U.S. number that is yours to keep. Then, when you get home, you just swap out the sim card with your regular sim.

I was going to make a joke about the thread title being an oxymoron, but I'll let it slide.

Definitely check out Roam Mobility as Rubygoose suggested. I am not much of a phone user and don't own a smart phone (shocking, I know) and I can't use my pay-as-you-go phone in California.

I bought a Roam phone at London Drugs for my last trip - no data, but I used the phone and text features for a week. (the phone was $50 but you can pick up the SIM card only for $20) and the talk/text plan was $25 for 8 days. I was very happy with my choice. I know you can get data plans also - Roam uses T-Mobile's network.

Hi, I don't if the link works, but actually trying to answer your question which was using an unlocked (assuming this is what you mean by "cracked") phone for data while in CA. I have no experience with Roam or their data prices, but I use the GoPlan (prepaid) with ATT. I travel to the US several times a year (from Canada) and need to use data on occasion, so use an unlocked Samsung3 with an ATT sim (got on a free promo but $25 last month) which gives me a US phone number. I purchased a $100 prepaid card which keeps the number active for a year. I think for as low as $15 you get the number for a month. The problem if you only want data is you need a basic phone/text deal. Costs range from $25 - $60 per month plus $5 - $10 for additional data. Details can be found at att.com

I hope this helps.

Cheers!

Wow this is great information. Thanks everybody! One more question ... Is wifi difficult to come by in the parks?

Hop over to the Disboards Canadian forum. There is a sticky right at the top which has everything you'd ever want to know regarding cell phone and data options for us Canucks.

There is no WiFi in the parks. Most hotels have WiFi (including the Disney hotels) and I believe the Starbucks in Downtown Disney has WiFi.

I don't know if it has changed since October 2013, but I used my tablet to send "real" time email updates to my boys from all of the parks.

Perhaps I should have been more specific - there is no WiFi in the Disneyland parks. There is in Walt Disney World.

You may be able to piggy-back on the GCH WiFi if you are in Condor Flats in DCA, but there is no WiFi provided in DL.

I had my phone unlocked and used ROAM and loved it. I had data added to mine as I was waiting for an important email and had to make sure I got it and out hotel had no wifi. It really was worth the money as I was able to phone home when needed.
