I did a search and couldn't find anything specifically on this topic.

I thought maybe we could all post what works for us.

This is what we do:

-book on board
-book with a travel agent that offers an OBC
-WestJet RBC MasterCard ($99 companion flight yearly)

Would love to hear everyone else's tips!

I break up my payments into a little each month before the cruise since I'm not great at timing the Can $ highs! Don't know if I've saved anything but I feel like I'm doing something to help. Mind you, if I see a sudden, good gain in Can $ value, I might pay off a little more that day... Would love to have the Disney Credit Card, but alas, I live too far north for that! :)

we have a scotiabank amex which we accumulate points on. One of the rewards is a $100 Disney gift card!! Used it at WDW and it is usd, so bonus! Also the gift card from Disney Movie Rewards is in USD. Our next cruise is leaving from San Juan. We had a hotel booked for 2 nights before embarkation, but expedia.ca came out with a ridiculous deal where we could pre-pay the hotel in CDN, so we jumped on it..saving a few hundred there. Also, I transfer $40 or $50 every pay into a USD account, so it doesn't hurt so much.

We stalk the prices of flights. We booked our flights for March 2016 in May 2015 because they were the right price. Due to the horrible exchange rate right now, saving a bit of money on the flights helps.

I was actually very surprised by what Disney does not do for Canadian cruisers that rcl does. you can book your reservation in Canadian funds with rcl and that saves a ton. dcl could easily do this but as yet does not. maybe soon??
rcl also offers a 10% rate for pre booked onboard credits. I was able to purchase $500 u.s. for $550 candian where as that would cost me $675 Canadian at todays rate from a bank or on my cc. dcl could also do something like that.

but, as to the original question, I live close to the boarder and had a target credit card which allowed me to purchase Disney gift cards at 5% off, not much but $50 on every $1000 of your cruise is nothing to sniff at. I stopped doing this as I found target has issues with the knowledge of how their cards worked and it became more of a bother than not.

I also do as a pp mentioned and have a u.s. account that I put money into every few weeks for the cost dollar averaging benefit.

I have a us mastercard so I can do my purchases in u.s. and then I can pay from my u.s. account when I get home. that saves any foreign transaction fees.

plus as an airmile collector I get those on both my u.s. and Canadian credit cards. I can purchase free flights or admission tickets to wdw which helps with the before and after cruise stays.

we fly out of a u.s. city and even with the rate as bad as it is we save tons. our taxes on flights blow my mind. for our next flight if we flew from Toronto round trip would cost us $838.70 with $158.701 being taxes for one person. the same dates with jet blue flying from the u.s. is $332.08 with $49.40 being taxes. even if you converted the u.s. using todays rate of $1.35 cnd per $1 u.s. we save $400 per person. HUGE savings. my advice on flights is if you can shop around, do so. if you have a u.s. airport within a few hours drive it could well be worth your while to save some big $$'s.

I am totAlly watching that thread.

We booked on board. It made a difference + it gave us OBC.

We get credit cards with aeroplan points to buy plane tickets for a lower price.

I don't use travel agents, I'm too much of a control freak.

Where do you live?

From Montreal, it never cost us more than 425$ CAN (taxes included)per person for a round trip... (We shop but we always end up with Air Canada Rouge. Once we got it for 385$ CAN!)

We don't own a car nor own drivers licenses so we cannot travel from the US.

i'm two and a half hours outside of toronto and two hours outside of syracuse. i just checked flights from montreal with air canada rouge and it would cost me $889.89, taxes of that being $169.89 for the same dates as i have listed above. it would also take me three hours and twenty minutes, so longer than the other two, which i would gladly drive if i got a good deal.
i keep hearing about wonderful deals when flying from canada but i have never been able to get one. even when i look at using my air miles for flights we have to pay the taxes and more often than not i can get flights from syracuse for the same amount as the taxes are so why waste my air miles?
i keep looking but i just can't find anything so i will continue to fly u.s., at least until our rates and taxes get better. thanks for the information though.

What dates are you looking for?

We fly out of the US too. We've decided to fly into Fort Lauderdale rather than Miami. There's a shuttle to our hotel in Fort Lauderdale which is free. And a shuttle from the hotel to the port for $15 and port to Fort Lauderdale airport for $15. Our flights from Detroit to Fort Lauderdale came in just under $200 CAD round trip per person.

I booked my flights with my aeroplan points and it cost me just under $400 dollars total for 3 people ( Montreal to Miami)! Definitely helped with the cost! When I booked my cruise 6 months ago I chose to pay in Canadian funds so the exchange rate wouldn't affect me (glad I did given the steep drop).

Don't fly out of Pearson (YYZ) if you can help it.

Get a CC that earns you points towards travel. Bear in mind that some cards that provide the best return on points have an annual fee.

Get a NEXUS card. It may not save you money, but it will definitely save you time crossing into the US.

If you have a Costco card, see if there are any car rental deals you can take advantage of. Don't forget to sign up for the car rental memberships - this can also help you save time waiting in the rental line. Just remember that they still take Amex in the US. For now.

-stalk the price of flights and book as soon as I find a price that we can 'live with' lol
-use airmiles to get park hopper passes for Disneyland
-use our Amazon.ca Visa for any transactions involving US currency since it doesn't charge a conversion fee
-eventhough our cruise PIF date wasn't until July we paid it off in April and saved a bit with the exchange (dollar was around 81 cents when we paid it off)
-will probably at least book a placeholder cruise this week when we are on the Wonder because even if there is a remote chance we will cruise again then we can take advantage of the benefits of booking onboard.

Watch for deals on Groupon for Orlando or other places you'll be visiting in the US. Last cruise we had a stop in Key West and I managed to score a great price on one of the Trolley Tours for us!

How did you "chose" to pay in Canadian funds? I've never had the option...

There's a really great App I heard about on cityline. I used it for both the flights to Miami and a trip to New Orleans I have planned. It's called hopper. You put in your search criteria and it tells you if now is a good time to buy or wait. You receive a notification when the price is as low as it's going to get. I had trouble buying the ticket through the app plus they charge you $15 for buying the ticket through them. So instead once I got the notification I just went to the airline website and bought directly through them.

My travel agent gave me the option. You don't get the choice on DCL.
your travel agent let you purchase in Canadian for a dcl cruise? have never heard of that. I would think the only way they could do that would be to pay for the cruise up front then give you the amount that it is equivalent to. would you ask your t.a. next time your speaking with her how that works. I would think a lot of Canadians would be interested in a loop hole.
or are you referring to other cruise lines like rcl, that I can understand. they do it all the time.
