Canadian DISer's Book Club - October 2008

I am on a HUGE Debbie Macomber kick right now ~ I am reading the Cedar Cove series and Just finished # 7 last night. I have #8 but am saving it for Thanksgiving weekend when I go to Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort.:cloud9:

The last author I was into was Maeve Binchy but I have read all her books and am waiting for a new one. My favourite of hers was "Tara Road".:lovestruc

I;ve read the Golden Compass - quite good, a bit hard to follow in the beginning. Much better than the movie - and makes sense in the end, which I found the movie didn't (I saw the movie before I read the book and didn't find the movie put all the pieces together well).

We are currently listening to the Golden Compass on Audio CD in the car. It is really well done and we are enjoying it. They have the 3 books available in Audio CD in our Library.

I just finished Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. It was a good read.

I will be starting Blindness by Jose Saramago next. Anyone read it?

I am a James Patterson fan to. Through out the summer I read all of his Alex Cross books, except the last tow. I can't find them yet. I never enjoyed his other books as much, the ones he co-authored with several other writers. I guess it shows their style too much.

Nora Roberts is a fave to. I loved the Blue Dhalia trilogy as well, but my fave was the Sun, Moon and Stars one from a few years ago. Takes place in Ireland. Really, really good.

I also love her individual books. I think my favorite is The Three Fates and The Reef. She is a fantastic writer.

An earlier poster asked about The Story of Edgar Sawtelle ( I think that is the name). Has anyone read it yet? It is the Oprah book club choice and it does look good. I am interested in some other opinions of that one.

Suz

Great to meet another Nora fan!! I too loved the Sun Moon trilogy..that's the one I was trying to think of .My all time fav is the Key Trilogy and close runner up the Circle Trilogy .....oh I guess I like them all.

I agree about James Patterson ..Alex Cross is such a great character.....I also like the Women's Murder Mystery series. Along the lines of teen books some of us are reading , James P has a great trilogy for teens that I loved called Maximum Ride..

I have read some Maeve Binchy books too that I enjoyed, can't remember titles. When you mentioned "Tara" I just remembered that I bought "Rhett's People" a followup to Gone with the wind approved by Margaret Mitchells estate.....I am keeping it for my trip. Anyone read it?

P.S. Thanks to all who have mentioned authors I don;t know but will now check out......

I had a library I used to go to and I really loved what they would do...they had lists that said:

"if you love reading "so and so" , then you will like "so and so"

It was great...so this is similar idea.....:goodvibes

Another shout out for Maeve Binchy - by far one of my all time favourite writers. She has a way of developing characters that you actually think are real and will think about how they are doing when you aren't reading!

Another good series of books is the Sisterhood by Fern Michaels - if anyone likes a good revenge story - this is definately the series to look at.

Just noticed there is a new Maeve Binchy!!! HEART AND SOUL ~ guess what on my Christmas list? ;)

My mom picked up Heart and Soul as soon as it was available at Costco and then passed it on to me. Fantastic read!! Without giving anything away, if you've ever wondered what happened to previous characters like the twins, you'll find out in this book.

The wife is loving the twilight series. I bought it for her for her birthday. Knew it was right down her alley. Not for me though. Are there any male posters here? Although actually i'm sure women posters could help me out too. I'm looking for any deep philosophical type books. I recently read One by Richard Bach. It's a good read if you want to look within yourself and just try to ponder your own existance, lifes meaning and many other philosophical questions. I thought it got to be a bit much by the end though because it really started to dwell on the couples true love for one another....ya i'm not sappy at all (although i did love the notebook). So any recomendations for a book that could leave me asking any deep questions?

Does she want to sell it? I'll buy it from her ~ just let her know :)

Three books I have read recently that I loved were PS I Love you...way better then the movie. The Other Boelyn Girl, I have bought a bunch of Phillipa Gregory's book because of this book....unbelievable what happened way back when. The Secret life of Bees...one of my new favourite books, light read, loved it!! I have started Twilight recently and am enjoying it so far.

I love Debra Ginsberg and am reading ~About My Sisters~ slowly b/c I don't want it to end. Also bought it for my sis for Christmas.

I just finished reading 'Vanishing Acts' by Jodi Picoult which I really enjoyed. I had to stop reading it half-way through because the book 'Twilight', which I'd had on reserve at our library became available and I couldn't wait to read it plus I could only have it on a two week loan. I read Twilight in two days and loved it!

I then finished Vanishing Acts and am now reading 'The Welcoming' by Nora Roberts.

I also have 'New Moon' and 'Eclipse' (2nd and 3rd of the Twilight series) and 'My Sister's Keeper' by Jodi Picoult on hold at the library
