Canadian Buffoon's DISmeet vacation - 09/14 - Bowled Over

I dunno. Don't you remember, either?

I don't remember anything past...

Shoot, I don't remember that either.

Interesting fact: almost every submarine movie ever made is fantastic. Unless it stars Kelsey Grammer.

I happily never saw that one.

Ranks up there with the best museum exhibits I've ever seen. Maybe THE best.

Really! Wow!

:faint: Yeah...that place is not cheap. Better if you can spend the whole day. What a great museum, though!

I'd love to spend an entire day there.
Should go back.
Wish I could bring my dad...
But his health isn't quite good enough.

As a land-lubber, I have to ask: what's the difference?

One is spelled B-O-A-T
and the other is S-H-I-P.

I think it's just a convention
that carried on from days long gone.

As one does. I mean, how could you not?

::yes::

If you're going to blow up the earth, that's the way to do it.

It's obstructing the view of Venus.

Nice shot. I like that angle.

Thanks!
I had to duck when
the torpedo went by, though.

You do have a towing hitch on the car, right?

::yes:: I don't think I could do it.

Honestly?
I think I could....
But not during wartime.
Man... talk about slowly
being driven mad.

Well, the one in the middle says "BBC", so I'm assuming that's hooked up to the TV antenna. I'll spin that one.

Sure! That should work.

That's annoying. I'm sure they have another tour group coming behind you and have a schedule to keep, but I can't imagine a couple of photos are going to throw things off.

Yeah. I was lagging behind,
but not enough to hold anything up.

Someone has to be last.

So dumb government bureaucracy was a thing even back then.

Well...
If the Germans found out
that the Allies captured an Enigma,
they would change their codes
and then all that valuable intel
would be lost.

You're right. It's very cool.

Right???

Absolutely! It's battle-tested.

::yes::

Mine was slightly blurrier.

Well, it's too clean and looks like it's made of cardboard. And the bottom lander would have been left on the moon.

And the top part
can't survive re-entry.
Only one made it that far
(moon and back).
Know which one?

Such a cool museum.

::yes::

This always confused me. Isn't the building the pendulum is attached to also rotating with the earth?:confused3

That's the whole point.
The spikes that the ball hits
are attached to the building.
The building is attached to the planet.
So the building rotates with the planet.

But the direction that the ball moves in,
doesn't change.
The pendulum's base revolves
while the path doesn't vary.

There must have been a lot of Harley shops along the way.

So now I'm picturing you crashing and swerving through fences and backyards and clotheslines, and it's kind of awesome.

She was so shocked a man asked for directions she didn't know how to react.

:lmao:

Cool! I would definitely want to try that out.

I think you'd enjoy it.

That you didn't want to stop at a bathroom every 5 minutes?

Nah. I'm like a camel.

Yes. But you didn't work very hard to hide it.

True.
And next update,
there's only one spot to put it.

It's incredible to think of a human being living in a submarine for days at a time.

Days... months!
You better be able
to go without privacy for a while.

I have experienced a submarine tour myself at the Seawolf Park in Galveston. It just boggles the mind, the thought of living in there. Pictures really don't do justice to the small size that these people had to live in.

Yeah.
Bigger than I expected, yet...
Still so dang small on the inside.

Thanks, he ended up calling me so that is good! It's not a guarantee but his reason for calling was to let me know what tickets I would need "if" I come up so I think this is a good sign. No reason to call and tell me what to get if I'm not going up!

Sounds really promising!

Sounds fascinating. I had a history elective last semester that made me interested in WWII vehicles.

Really!
What kind of elective was that?

You are approaching Disney prices!

Ugh. I know.

I love your little facts!

Some of them are even factual!

That thing is huge. Flabbergasting.

And yet... it's not even
half as long as modern
missile subs.

I'll send down the truck. Will be a great lawn ornament for you and your neighbors.

And their neighbors...

The bed's look really cool but I feel like I would fear rolling off the bed and onto the bomb.

Yeah. You could get a nasty bump.

I'm feeling lucky, lets spin them all!

Yay!
<glug><glug><glug>

That's crazy to me, I know they have timelines but a few seconds here and there for Pkondz to get his photo shoot on isn't going to hurt.

Yeah!

I want to get off this rock! So this is very cool. I am looking at applying for an internship with SpaceX for next summer!

Really! Cool!
My company just launched
our sixth payload with Space X.
One more to go.

Awe inspiring, pioneer's have always been idol's to me and the only way now is to head to other planets!

Pretty much. ::yes::

Makes you feel small. Even me.

Glad you clarified that.

I feel like most Disney fans are also railroad fans. I love taking the train whenever I can.

Everyone stops at the model
railway in Germany, too.

This is a super interesting fact. I had not heard of this before but now have a tab open and ready to go.

Yep. The world ain't flat, kids.

I used to watch this show daily when I was living with my grandma because she got offended by sports and hated animation.

I can see how that would happen, then.
I don't watch it much anymore.
But on occasion.

Drinking root beer. Stop. Is the only way to drink root beer. Truly the nectar of the gods.

::yes::

This was a great update!

Thanks! :goodvibes

Well, I was at “The Remedy” enjoying schnitzels and beer

::yes::

Pretty close to what I had that day.

It’s amazing how dramatically our lives are affected by books we encounter as kids.
A whole lot of life stories seem to start out that way

Yep.
Many a tale has started with:
"When I was little..."

Might be the single best Sub film made.

Very well could be.

My favorite to watch though is “The Enemy Below” (among others)
A great chess battle between skippers.

Or… you could substitute the old Star Trek episode: “Balance of Terror”, which was basically the same story, just transferred to a different type of ocean (and is probably about the best original Trek episode made).

Don't recall if I've seen that one.
Maybe?
Certain have seen the Star Trek one.

Ahhh… the dangers of reading Mark’s TRs.

I like that kind of danger.

And just how did you figure you were going to judge depth without that?

I had a handful of pennies.
I would drop one every now and then
and count the seconds.

Well…
You are at least capable of reading, so there is an actual accomplishment, of sorts, involved here.

:rolleyes1

U-505 is a Type IX-C…
Those are a longer and nearly twice the displacement of the most common U-Boats (Type VII-C)

But compared to the other major subs from the time period, even this one was about a third smaller than its contemporaries.

That, I was not aware of. Huh!

Correct, but it’s a distinction of tradition and is left over from their earliest development.

Yep. That's what I found, too.

The Kriegsmarine may have believed in Spartan accommodations, but always made room for effective armament.

And that's gonna win
over comfort any day.

Pricy, but I’ll likely pay that out when I finally get up to Chicago.

::yes::

Of course, you could have boarded a US sub from the same time period for only $15 total.
And that one is even near 150 miles closer to your house.

What? Where is this?

Strategic application of an illudium q-36 would have created the opening required for egress

I was worried I'd take out my house, too.

Ehhh, Lake Michigan was just across the way…
How hard could it have been?

:lmao:

That’s actually spacious compared to the Type-VIIs

I can well imagine.

Actually... no. I can't.

There are three & four high bunks stowed in between and amongst the missile launch tubes aboard the Boomers currently in service.

Sweet dreams…

Bang your head on a torpedo
or wake up glowing in the dark...

I’d be rather ticked.
You paid plenty to explore the boat; they shouldn’t be rushing folks through merely to justify selling more admissions. I hate when any historic site does that nonsense.

Yeah.
Dude really needed to chill out.

Excellent look at Alan Turing
Both inspiring and unforgivably tragic.

::yes::

Standing Directives are often at odds with the immediate situation in the field.
(especially when combined with ridged interpretations)

Well...
I get it.
Word gets out that a sub
is captured and all your
intelligence goes out the window.

Well, actually I am very jaded, but not when it comes to space artifacts.
Aurora-7 is most definitely on my Get-Your-Sorry-A**-There list.

::yes::

Agreed…
On the list as well.
I’ve seen the mock-up aboard the Yorktown, but not the real article.

It'd be cool to put it on the Yorktown, though.

Reentry is a bi!ch…

Yep!

Iconic…
and right sobering.

Interesting choice of words.
I thought of "Awe inspiring".

But don’t you wish you could?

Oh, yes!

Well, none of the craft were designed for the trip back and would never have survived reentry.
All the surviving decent stages are still on the moon and most of the ascent stages that left Earth were allowed to impact back on the moon’s surface with three exceptions:
Spider and Aquarius were jettisoned and allowed to burn up in Earth’s atmosphere
Snoopy is currently in orbit around the sun.

Too much information?

Nope! But... knew it all already. ;)
(Well... I don't really count Spider.
It never went to the moon.)

Guilty as charged… Irresistible things…
I spent vast amounts of hard gained childhood bucks and time acquiring and building such contrivances. Still have a few on hand and a small collection of kits that I haven’t made time to build yet. I can’t just walk by a well done model.

Might have built the odd model myself. :)

It’s like a drug…
You just have to stop and watch…

::yes::

I was 12 or 13 when I first saw one of those (long time… a long time). It was in the grand lobby of one of the Smithsonian museums in DC. They can suck you in just waiting to see it actually knock down the next pin in line.

(Near as bad as watching model trains.)

I got lucky in that a pin
got knocked over
right away.

And that the length of time it takes to make a complete rotation is longer depending on how far it is from one of the poles.

::yes:: Yep!

There’s some wild and counterintuitive math involved in figuring that…
Makes the work done by astrophysicists and NASAs orbital mechanics folks all the more impressive.

Please tell me you've seen
the movie Hidden Figures?

Sure you didn’t mistakenly tell Betty where you wanted her to go?

:rolleyes1

Also be sure to check on the Albuquerque settings…
Having that one flipped on can result in a lot of wrong turns.

Suggestion?
Not something a mite more emphatic?

Well... she did get a bit... strident.

“Sonic” does that, but finding an original car-hop dive is way more fun and usually better food.
We have a spot in Charlotte that still does it that way as well (been on DD&D too).
Good food and nostalgic.

Hmmm... So which is better?
That spot (name?) or The Remedy?

Certainly the easy one…
If you hid your moniker this round, I missed that.

Nope. Just the one.

I drove over to the museum
and entered the parking lot.
A mere $22 for parking.
I planned on being here no more
than two hours.
Oh well.

:sad2:

I entered the museum
and paid the fee.
Another $23.

:sad2:

DSC04626_zpslq9urkpo.jpg

Oh my goodness! It's massive! That's a PERSON on the far right...and that's a GIANT boat.

I rounded the corner at the stern
of the boat and saw a kiosk
for purchasing tickets
to tour the interior.

Heck, yes!

COOL! Sign me up!

Another $12 flew out of my wallet.

:sad2:

By now I assumed that I had paid
for the boat, but I couldn't figure
out a way to get it out of the building.

The lack of water was also problematic.

:rotfl:

That's quite the conundrum!

Even better on the cool-o-meter,
(in my humble opinion)
is this Apollo capsule.

DSC04656_zpsuiy7jlro.jpg

Now THIS is also cool.

One of the most iconic photos ever
was shot by an Apollo 8 astronaut.
Perhaps you recognize Earthrise?

NASA-Apollo8-Dec24-Earthrise_zpslq7hzctx.jpg

I DO recognize it! Beautiful photo. How amazing to think that in viewing the Apollo, you've got some kind of small connection to this photo and how it was taken...the world is simultaneously very big and very small...

I checked Betty's settings and...
Somehow I had selected
"Avoid highways".
I deselected that and the
display promptly changed
to about four hours...
with a suggestion to maybe
get on the highway.

Oh my goodness! Oh no!!:rotfl: That could have been very bad. Glad you figured it out quickly! How strange.

The crewman would call out
"Mark Twain!"
The captain would know
they were safe.
And thus endeth the educational
component of this chapter.
Some history I was unaware of thanks teach for the info

But I did have a pit stop
at about the four hour mark.
 Indy really? Now that you know I'm from here we'll have to plan a Dis meet I can take you to get 2 other Harley chips and we can find a better place to eat.

Don't know why but I find it hilarious that you got out of the car to take this pic.

I'd love to spend an entire day there.
Should go back.
Wish I could bring my dad...
But his health isn't quite good enough.

Dang. It's cool that being able to see exhibits like this connects you to the interest he sparked way back when.

One is spelled B-O-A-T
and the other is S-H-I-P.

I think it's just a convention
that carried on from days long gone.

I see. Not a real complex system, then.

Thanks!
I had to duck when

They must have known you were coming.

This is exactly how I picture you driving.

Nah. I'm like a camel.

I meant to say something about that hump in your back.

That is a big boat.

Won't fit in my bathtub.
Tragic.

He would not make a good Disney VIP tour guide.

Sometimes he even pointed
at me with one finger!

I won't say which...

:thumbsup2 <- not a thumb

True...since you do own the boat. Or maybe it was only a rental.

Either way... it's mine for now!

I have seen the movie and really liked it. That is really interesting!

Good movie. ::yes::

Oh thought this might have been a screenshot from Mission: Space!

Actually, I'm sure that's the
inspiration behind many
of those kinds of shots.

Well, I personally prefer the purple plastic wrap rather than the yellow metallic stuff. So it must be that.

You got it!!!

Haha I 've done this before!

Phew! So it's not just me!

What kind of tenderloin is this? Pork? Beef?

Pork.

Interesting. I had no idea it would be breaded like this. and it is quite big. It looks pretty good too.

Pounded flat, breaded, deep fried.

Like all good things.

Oh the horror. :faint:

JK - looking forward to it!

Btw, even though I've been to MSI numerous times, I'm not sure I've ever actually visited the U-boat!

What???

:faint:

So... out of curiosity,
next time you go...
Will you?
Or not really your cup of tea?

Partly because there are just so many other exhibits, of course.

Now this I understand.
That is one really good museum.

The model railroad has always been one of my favorites, from when I was a small child. One of the few exhibits that has been there every time I've visited, tho it has definitely changed over the years.

Oh?
Has it gotten bigger?
Or just different,
while keeping the same size?

Looks like an interesting museum - quite a mix of exhibits.

It's a really good museum. :)

Sounds fun! I haven't had any DISmeets yet!

Well, I think it's high time
you change that!

I haven't but I believe it is pretty famous in the world of submarine films.

::yes::

That tactic usually makes me go very slowly!

Oooohhh…. a rebel!

Who doesn't stop for a miniature railway?

No one.
That's who.

As you do...when are you coming over to my local Harley shop?

I think visiting all 30
shops in the UK
would make for a
fairly interesting trip.

I might have to consider this!

Enjoy your getaway!

I did! :)

I don't blame you for not multi-quoting on a phone - iPads aren't any better.

The worst.
And since I bold
and colour the text,
it makes it pretty
much impossible.

Great update!

Thanks! :goodvibes

That boat looks awesome.

It was sooooo cool!

Back in the ‘80s my cousin joined the Navy right out of high school and served on a submarine for 4 years. You have to pass a LOT of psychological tests to be eligible. Now he owns a bunch of guns and supports questionable politicians. (What WERE those tests, anyway?)

So... now I'm kinda worrying
about WWIII starting up
from some crazed submariner.

Am recovering pretty well from my hand surgery.

Glad to hear it.

Enough so that Bill asked me if I wanted to squeeze one more trip to the World before my AP runs out in mid-September. I said no, I’m going to start PT soon so I’m fine just waiting for our Panama Canal cruise next spring.

You said...… no...……..

Panama Canal cruise.
My folks did that.
They enjoyed it.

So he said OK, I’ll just book us into my favorite hotel (POFQ) instead of yours (Yacht/ Beach). We’ll be there Labor Day weekend for a 5 day trip. I’m sure going to be sweating in my arm splint but at least it’s washable!

So you're going anyway.
That's coming up soon!

OK, thanks for the recap, I think that's about as far as I remember as well.

I should hope so.
If you remember more...

That's a bad thing.

Was that on Mark's TR that you heard about that?

::yes::

That is a pretty big boat!

It was so much bigger than I expected!

Perfect for destroying the Earth!

YES!!!!

er… uh...
I mean...

Goodness, who would do
such a thing?

:rolleyes1

It's amazing the circumstances that people will put themselves under.

Sometimes by choice!

No, I don't think I can.

How tired would you
have to be before
sleeping beside
a bomb isn't an issue?

C'mon dude lighten up. I have the same problem with tour guides. I want pictures without everyone else on the tour in the shots.

Exactly!

It's too clean? :confused3

The bottom half stays
on the moon.
The top half isn't designed
for re-entry.
It's typically left to crash
back on the moon.
Either deliberately or
as a result of orbital decay.

I hate when that happens.

You've done it too??

So what meat exactly is that in a tenderloin? Pork?

Yep! Pork.

I saw one....did I miss others?

Nope.
Just the one
super-obvious one.

Haven't seen that one but I have seen The Hunt for Red October. Does that one count?

Absolutely! Great movie.

Now this is starting to rival Disney pricing.

Was starting to think
I'd have to sell a kidney.

Then I remembered
that Disney has it.

Marvin sure looks eager to get his hands on that piece of equipment!

::yes::
Luckily he was tackled
by security.
Otherwise we wouldn't
be here right now.

Yikes! I'm not really claustrophobic but man, that looks uncomfortably cozy.

Just a wee bit.

My dad was in the Navy but I'm not actually sure if he ever went out on a sub. I regret not asking him more about his time in the service before he passed away.

I know I'm going to feel
the same way about my dad.

:scared1: Um, that would be a hard no.

Yep.
"And here's your bed.
Try not to bump the bomb."

That sounds like sound government logic right there.

Well....

If the Germans found out
that the Allies had a sub,
they would know their codes
were broken and change them.
That would mean the loss
of intel, the value of which
far outstripped the capture
of a sub.

I've seen one of these before but I'm not sure where. Maybe the Smithsonian in DC?

That would be a very
likely spot to have one.

My family loves diners! If you ever make it down my way you should check out the Marietta Diner. DH and I eat there all the time. I'm not sure what exactly their specialty is, the menu is huge!

Thanks for that link!
I think I'll eat there
in September.

Yep, pretty easy this time. Unless there was a second harder one that I missed?

Nope!
Easy peasy this time.
Next one won't be
too hard either.

Oh my goodness! It's massive! That's a PERSON on the far right...and that's a GIANT boat.

::yes::
I was really surprised
at how big it was.
I was really expecting
something about
half the size.

COOL! Sign me up!

I'll go with you!

:rotfl:

That's quite the conundrum!

Now THIS is also cool.

::yes::

I DO recognize it! Beautiful photo. How amazing to think that in viewing the Apollo, you've got some kind of small connection to this photo and how it was taken...the world is simultaneously very big and very small...

That's very true.
Have you seen this photo?
It was taken by the Cassini spacecraft

131113102309-saturn-labled-horizontal-large-gallery.jpg

Oh my goodness! Oh no!!:rotfl: That could have been very bad. Glad you figured it out quickly! How strange.

No idea how it happened!
I think she's out to get me.

Some history I was unaware of thanks teach for the info

You're welcome.

I'll expect an apple
if we ever meet.

 Indy really? Now that you know I'm from here we'll have to plan a Dis meet I can take you to get 2 other Harley chips and we can find a better place to eat.

Hmmm.... maybe
(Maybe!)
October?
Not sure yet...

Don't know why but I find it hilarious that you got out of the car to take this pic.

Oh, there's a story there.
I knew I wanted the shot...
But if you open and close
the door, you're gonna have
rootbeer in the car
and broken glass
on the ground.

So I crawled over the
center column and
out the passenger door.
Repeat in reverse,
to get back in.

Dang. It's cool that being able to see exhibits like this connects you to the interest he sparked way back when.

::yes::

I see. Not a real complex system, then.

Nope. Just...
That's the way it is.

They must have known you were coming.

They had to protect the
illudium q-36 explosive
space modulator.

I could probably last a night in there.

Then it's out through
the torpedo tube?

Ah, I see. That makes more sense.

::yes::

You need to have the image stabilization turned on.

Dang it!
Now you tell me!

Not without googling, no. I know Apollo 13's served as a lifeline in space, though.

See? You didn't have to Google.
That's the one.

Interesting. It still feels counter-intuitive.

It's not just your head
that is spinning.

This is exactly how I picture you driving.

I meant to say something about that hump in your back.

I think I'll eat there

So you are heading down Atlanta way in September? If you end up doing a DIS meet, give me a holler. September is a rough month for me at work but maybe I could sneak away for a few hours.

OK, that makes a little more sense.

::yes::

So you are heading down Atlanta way in September? If you end up doing a DIS meet, give me a holler. September is a rough month for me at work but maybe I could sneak away for a few hours.

I'll have a few more details
in a couple of updates.
(Yes, I realize that sounds odd...)

You'll see.

The Cat's In The Credible

Okay... a quick and dirty update.
Admittedly, not much
happened today.
I had one little stop
before I really started.
And then pretty much
no stops, until I stopped
at the end of the day.
(Well... except for some
more poker chips.)

I got up in the morning
and headed out to the car.
I asked Betty to please
direct me to the "Yuko-En on
the Elkhorn" Japanese Garden.
(Yeah, so I like Japanese Gardens.
Sue me.)

Betty told me to "Drive to highlighted route."
I did and three minutes later,
she told me to turn left.
Two minutes after that,
"Arriving at destination."

Well... that was quick.

DSC04688_zpssi0abi4l.jpg

I grabbed my camera
and entered the garden.
After a couple days of driving,
I was looking forward to
a nice relaxing sashay
in a very zen environment.

DSC04692_zpsegxn3zqb.jpg

DSC04694_zpsew3z05wo.jpg

Doesn't that look inviting?
I thought so too.
I rounded that corner
in the above photo and...

BRAAAAAAA!!!!! BRAAAAAA!!!!! BRAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

The grounds crew were
busy working.
Leaf blowers and hedge trimmers
were roaring all around.

So much for "relaxing".

Nevertheless, I was determined
to at least take a few photos.

DSC04695_zpsyuvpamso.jpg

DSC04696_zpsfzlp8wxq.jpg

Finally, the noise got to me
and I looked for an escape.
I noticed a path leading off
into the distance
and decided to see where
it would take me.

DSC04709_zpssq9ipmpg.jpg

DSC04711b_zps8nulfv1j.jpg

Hmmm.... not exactly promising,
is it?

I eventually exited out
at this little waterfall area.

DSC04719_zpsiodqjgco.jpg

It wasn't much,
but I dutifully
took a photograph.

While I was taking this photo,
a trio of young men
(oh, early 20s, I'd guess)
arrived carrying fishing rods.
They were eyeing me,
probably wondering why
I was taking photos of their
fishing hole.

("I'm stealing your fish!" I yelled.
They promptly beat the carp out of me.)

Stop cheering.
Didn't you notice the parentheses?
It didn't happen.
You'll have to keep dreaming.
And hoping.

I wanted to move on as quickly
as I could so as not to
be in their way.
I packed up my gear,
nodded politely, then said.
"What kind of fish do you catch here?"

I'm not an expert on North American
fresh-water fish, but I figured
there was a better than even chance
that I'd recognize the species.
Especially if the response was one
of the more common ones like
trout or bass.

"Kett." The young man replied.
(Rhymes with 'get' or 'let'.
Except drawn out a bit more.
Like "Keh-yet". Two syllables.)
Hmmm... I'd never heard of "Kett" before.
Perhaps I misheard?
"Sorry." I said. "What was that?"
"Keh-yet." He said again.
Suddenly it dawned on me.
I did know that species!
Cat! As in "catfish".

With understanding, I felt safe
to continue the conversation.
"Good fishing around here?" I asked.
He nodded and said.
"Murphle fang donner, hehm."
I had no clue what he'd said to me.
I'm pretty sure he thought
it was English, but... :confused3

I nodded sagely and said.
"Okay. Have a good day."
I surreptitiously slid my iPod
out of my pocket and opened
the translator app.
"Sum' farble." He said, turning back
to the river with visions of "Kett"
dancing in his mind.

I glanced at the iPod as I walked away.
This is what it said:

"Good ol' boy" - detected English translation
sum' farble I do hope that your day will be a pleasant one

I picked up my pace as the sound
of a banjo beginning to play
reverberated in the air.

I made my way back to
the garden where I thought
I might be safe and decided
to visit the tea house
I'd noticed earlier.

It was closed, doors locked,
but the rock garden
was nice enough.

when I get out of the garden.

:tiptoe:

I drove all day
(with six brief pit stops
at Harley stores)
until I got to my next
and last stop, just south
of Greensboro, NC.

And that's all I have to say about that.

The haul for today:
