For Canadian travellers, I'm going to attempt to further clarify this change...
The sale of these items will continue to be prohibited within the sterile areas used by passengers on flights departing Canada and bound for the U.S. from airports providing U.S. pre-clearance services (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal). These passengers will still be required to transfer these items to their checked baggage before proceeding through security screening.
If you have not flown to the US via one of the big 7 airports lately, you may not be aware that currently ALL bottled/canned products are no longer for sale; if you buy a drink they will pour it into a cup and you must discard it before boarding. This includes some if not most of the Maple Leaf lounges. This will change on 9/22/6
Liquids, gels and aerosols in containers of any size continue to be prohibited from being brought through pre-board screening by passengers on their person or in their carry-on baggage. Passengers should continue to pack these items in their checked baggage.
Again, you still CANNOT bring liquid or gel through security; the lifting on the ban simply means that we will now be able to buy a drink while flying domestically or internationally (NOT to the US) and have that drink be in a bottle or can. Additionally, if you are flying domestically or internationally (but NOT to the US) you may take on board those purchases you made at the airside shops which were previously banned
This means that the traveller I witnessed a few weeks ago partially destroying a fridge wrapped in packing tape to get at a banned bottle of water can now travel without destroying private property. Nor will she need to scream at the gift shop clerk when he advises her that he can't sell her the water.
