Should Canada Day be a floating holiday so it lands on a Monday for a true long weekend or do you prefer it always be on July 1st and the day off changes from year to year?

I'm quite happy to keep it as it is. Kind of like the Americans - how silly would it be to see them celebrate the 4th of July on the 5th or 6th?

Would you also recommend that they "float" Christmas or Remembrance Day?

Summer is so short here in the great white north.. I would prefer a guaranteed long weekend as often as possible. So float it! What difference does it really make as long as we all know what it is we are celebrating!

This year we lose the long weekend for Canada Day.. working Monday - off Tuesday.. back to work Wednesday. Not relaxing at all. :(

I think it should be kept on the first. Although the long weekend is nice we are celebrating Canada so it should be done on the 1st.

When the United States chooses to celebrate their Independence Day would not seem silly to me at all.

We manage to celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria on Mondays that are not May 24th and no one seems to have a problem with it.

We also manage to deal with Labour Day and Thanksgiving always being on a Monday.

Those provinces that have a day off in February and August have it on a Monday, regardless of the date.

Christmas is celebrated in many countries around the world so no, I wouldn't recommend that it be floated.

Remembrance Day is not a national holiday although it is still a day off in many parts of the country, but like Christmas, it is observed by multiple nations (although called different names in different countries), so no I don't think it should be floated.

I am also not recommending that Canada Day float.

I merely posed the question, since in my office, they are giving us Monday off and we will be working on Tuesday, so we get a three day weekend, but miss taking part in any events on Canada Day and I wondered how other people felt about the holiday.

Given that as of this reply, 117 people have clicked on this post and only 11 have bothered to vote, apparently most people don't care (guess I should have provided an option of indifference in the poll).

Canada Day on the other hand impacts just one country.

Gosh, if you have the Monday off, and have to work on July 1, won't there be a lot of transportation issues? Public transportation is a huge mess for the entire day where I live, due to the many events.

I wish it had been a floating holiday .. at least this year. My husband had Saturday , Sunday and Tuesday off. Not the biggest deal except that he lives in another city for work because it's too far too commute on week days. So he was going to have to go back up Sunday night and come back Monday night and go back Tuesday:rolleyes:.
He did end up accruing enough over time to book the Monday ( no vacation time yet .. new job). So it worked. I had never really thought about it until this year, and it worked out so that we can get a long weekend at the cottage. But it was a bit of a pain.

We became Canada on July 1, 1867, and therefore I believe it should be celebrated on July 1st. It's not the same as Thanksgiving and Victoria Day (we are NOT a colony anymore, and observing the queen's birthday is really just a bonus).

I believe celebrating our independence as a country is important. To celebrate it on the day it happened is equally important.

Canada day should not float. Why not give extra days to make it a long weekend every year.

I prefer it when it's not Monday (or Friday). That way most people get longer weekends. I was the unfortunate soul to draw the short straw - I am the duty manager on Monday, but ALL of my peers are getting a 4-day weekend. Wednesdays are even better because with proper planning I can ensure that my entire staff manages at least a 5 day weekend either side of the holiday if they want it. And who wouldn't give up 2 days of their vacation allotment for a five day weekend?

I can't take Canadian holidays off myself ever anyway (as i work for a Canadian company) and then on the US holidays they always say "Hey you are Canadian so you can cover for us Americans!"

I think it should be celebrated on the 1st, regardless of the day on which it falls! Hope everyone's having a great day!:)

I like it to happen on the 1st. I own my own company and often I work on holidays anyway. The work just piles up other wise and still needs to be completed. I'm off today but only because I was on vacation all of last week and normally have Monday's to work from home so I opted to extend my vacay to include today. Most likely this is the only vacation time I'll be taking this year so I wanted to get the most mileage out of it.

My moto is any day away from work is a holiday!
