Canada 150 Buttons-Who Should Get One?

It could be though (just thinking out loud) that the hometown was meant as a general "hey just put where your home town is to represent so to speak"

I thought about that but decided it just didn't make sense.

I think you are absolutely right about poor communication and bad PR.

I think this will be the last time we see a "Citizens only" Button design at WDW!

The hometown thing is a strong indicator that the intention was only for Canadians.

But, if a birthday button is only for people having birthdays. It would make sense that only people that have a vested interest in the celebration of 150 years since Confederation* would be eligible or interested in wearing a button. Now I am not opposed to others wearing or getting the button. I mean there are lots of Americans with Canadian parents/grand parents and people that live in Canada that are not Canadian citizens. But I just think it is a bit silly to want something that commemorates something that you are not actually celebrating.

This is actually really funny to me. I am not Canadian, but I go usually once a year. This past year, I was in Victoria on Canada Day. My husband and I were with my cousin. We were out at the fireworks and had a great time. A number of people around us were talking about how it was the 150th celebration. We didn't think that was right. We ended up taking an informal poll of people and over half the people thought that July 1, 2016 was the celebration for the 150th. We'll be at WDW in February, with the same cousin, and I really hope we can get 150th pins.

One year, while we were in Epcot, they were celebrating China's Founder's Day (I think) and provided a certificate to guests who took a scavenger hunt-type quiz and completed it. The answers could be found throughout the China pavilion. We had fun doing it and the certificate was a great addition to the scrapbook...I hope they can come up with something similar to help all guests learn more about Canada and feel a part of the celebration.

Personally, my family has a lot of love for the neighbors to the north. My mom grew up listening to an Ontario radio station when weather conditions were right (we're on Lake Erie) and we'd "daycation" to the "better side" of Niagara Falls nearly every summer. My 8th Grade class trip was to Toronto and my sister's longest bff is half-French Canadian. We may not be by blood, but I'll at least be asking to answer some trivia if they'll let me; give it to the kid for his birthday. If the pin is just for Canadians, then so be it! I'll still enjoy a showing of O Canada while I'm there.

It's a pin, for crying out loud. If someone wants to celebrate Canada's birthday, give them a pin! Especially since it really seems Disney Parks Blog announced anyone could have one if they answered a trivia question.

This brings back memories of being on DCL Magic on July 4, 2015. We were docking in Iceland that day, but they had a big July 4 celebration on the ship that morning - everyone was invited! They had face painting, music, dancing and, the funniest thing for us, a British CM was handing out American flags to everyone!

Can't we all celebrate our northern neighbor's milestone?!

I posted about these buttons back in October in the Global Neighbours/Canadian forum.

My DD and I were among the first visitors to receive these buttons as they had just arrived at the pavilion.

A button was offered to me by the CM when he noticed I was Canadian by the ID I provided for my AP discount. He was very excited about them, asked if I had heard about them and that they just got them in. My daughter was only given one when she verified that that she too was Canadian. At that time it seemed you needed to provide proof of citizenship.

Like a PP mentioned, I'm not sure why you would want one unless you were celebrating the event. As much as I love our neighbours to the south, and globally for that matter, if the American pavilion was handing out commemorative buttons for whatever occasion I would not feel the need to have one. I'm not American. My opinion only, to each their own.

They should have 2 pins. One with the hometown thing for Canadians and another wishing Canada a happy 150th for people from any other country.

So should Disney start asking for proof of U.S. citizenship before allowing entry on the 4th of July? After all, why would you want to watch the celebratory fireworks if you aren't American???

It's silly to think that ONLY Canadian citizens would want to celebrate and proudly wear a button - everyone should be able to celebrate our neighbors to the north!

It's a little funny that our American friends only start to care about Canada when they are (apparently) bared from getting something free; I highly doubt many people who aren't Canadian would care about this if it wasn't free/exclusive.
It would be a shame to see these littered all over the ground. I think it's okay to save them for people who will appreciate them.

Who knew that a button would be the new hot topic? It is a really nice-looking button, though...

Truth be told, I'm hoping we can get the buttons when we go in January. We're not Canadian, but my husband has always had a fondness for Canada. His childhood favorite baseball team (and still his favorite team) is the Blue Jays and we even took our honeymoon to Toronto.

I told him he needs to wear a Blue Jays shirt the day we go to Epcot. Depending on how obscure the trivia question is, I'm thinking it's pretty likely he could answer. I understand they want to control costs a bit, but if you can answer a not-crazy-obvious trivia question, that should do the trick in showing you care about the Canadian button, not just about getting something free. Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed...
