Can you watch current football games on the ship?

DH and DS have realized we will be in Nassau when the 2015 SEC football championship game begins at 4pm EST December 5. I have told them I am sure we can find a bar in Nassau televising it, and the Sports Bar on the Dream will surely be televising it, but I may be blowing smoke to pacify them! What is the likelihood that they can watch it onboard? Not too worried, as I am sure they will both DVR it on home televisions, but I can hear the complaints now!

Best answer - maybe. IF the game is shown on ESPN or ABC, they may show it. Other stations, not so much. But they will probably be tuned to a station that will provide updates of games in progress.

It also depends on the satellite signal.

I'm pretty sure it's on CBS, so I guess that makes it even more doubtful!

It really depends. The ships play things other that ABC and ESPN but it is all done by satalliet so it depends on what is getting in. They showed the Super Bowl on our cruise and I'm sure it wasn't on a Disney owned network. I remember there being some college ball on other cruises but no clue what channels they were on. They were usually on in the sports bar.

It does depend. Another issue, the ship receives the East Coast satellite feed of the TV channels. Probably not an issue with the SEC, but I know West Coasters are often disappointed that the games they may care about are not the ones being shown on the feed the ship gets. The networks broadcast different games in different time zones, based on which game they feel would be of greatest interest to that time zone.

I don't know the answer for sure, but on a recent cruise they showed the NBC Sunday Night Game in the sports bar on the Magic. So while they definitely won't have it available in the staterooms, there is a possibility of seeing it on board.

They try to show big games, but when there's a conflict, they'll go with games that ESPN has international control over (for instance, the Super Bowl might have US distribution rights with NBC or CBS, but ESPN has the overseas rights). I'd say there's a pretty good chance they'll find a way to broadcast the SEC title game, but they won't make any promises.

Alabama will win. RTR! :-)

Disney owns ABC and ESPN so the chances are good they will have the game on.

They will show games from other networks but it really depends on what they will get from the satellite feeds. On the Wonder in May we were watching the NBA Playoffs on ESPN but some NY Ranger fans wanted to watch playoff hockey on NBC. Since there were more basketball fans in Diversions, we got the big screens and they put hockey on a few smaller tvs.

Also depends on whether someone comes in and ask for something else. My brother and a few others were in one of the bars watching the MI State vs. MI Uni football game on the Wonder and were the only ones there watching it for like 45 minutes. Then some other guy came in and asked for some other game (baseball) and they switched it. The ones that were in the bar were so mad as it was the last five minutes of the game and they wouldn't change it back. Worst part, the guy left right after they changed it so he didn't even stay to see whatever he requested. So the ones who had been watching and getting drinks for 45 minutes were not happy at all. They talked to several CM's and told them how wrong that was.

So they just sat there and watched the baseball game without saying anything at the time?

It is such a small thing but I probably would have stopped by Guest Services my next time through the lobby and let them know about it. They could at least clear up the policy or know that when it comes to sports it is best to say this is the game we are playing and leave it at that.

No they complained immediately but were told they couldn't change it back for some stupid reason. My brother left while I sat there for a bit as I was finishing my drink and when I left 15 minutes later another person was complaining still to another CM that it was not right they couldn't switch it back to the ESPN channel it was on. It did not end on a light note whatsoever and my brother did mention it to guest services how he didn't appreciate what had happened.

My brother did stop at guest services. I think the CM should have made sure no one was watching it but it was clear they were as they were rooting for their teams. There were no other people in there except for a small group watching that game. So yeah it was not fair to those guests who had been in there watching for a while to have it changed. I think what made them mad was the guy who asked for it, well he didn't even stay after they switched it.

I don't think you'll know until you're on the ship. We were on the Fantasy 10/10 eastern cruise and they showed NFL games from FOX and NBC plus the Cubs/St Louis game which was on TBS.

Games have always been a point of contention for us on the ship. We've had instances where we've started watching a game (opening day for baseball) which was advertised as playing in the Navigator, only to be kicked out halfway through because they were starting at DVC presentation. We've tried to watch games and told they needed to turn them off for overflow for the entertainment in the other room. We've had similar issues as above where we've been watching a game and had them turn it to another sporting event - it had to be the same game on all the screens.

I've made comments on this on the comment card for probably 4 of our 7 cruises, going back to 2003. It's obviously never going to change. We'll keep trying, but our expectation is that we won't get the games we want.

My DH and DS would probably be "thrown in the ship's brig" if someone turned off their game five minutes before it was over, because I am afraid they would turn that person "off" in a not too nice way! Especially if they had been in there paying all along! It was just rude to change channels from a show anyone is already watching without notice or permission! I can't believe Disney condoned this! Me, I could care less about football when I am on a tropical cruise but DH and DS are going along to please me and DDIL for the most part!
