Yes this is a budget question because if I can't get this purse clean, it is going in the garbage and I will have to buy a new one, which is a complete budget buster.

It is a lovely soft ivory colored leather and I have been abusing it for about 4 years now. I have damp-wiped it, but it is just nasty-dirty at this point. Since I am ready to dump it, I thought I would just throw it in the machine on gentle cycle and pray.

If anyone has any better ideas, I am open to suggestions.

You can buy a bottle of leather cleaner - it will get rid of the grime and also quite a few marks on leather.

Yep, get some saddle soap. You do not want to throw it in the washer unless you've exhausted all other possibilities, because it will almost certainly ruin the bag. Try a cleaner made for leather first.

Another vote for saddle soap. You can probably find it in the shoe care section - you don't have to go to a farm supply store. ;)

I will check out saddle soap. I assume, you don't immerse the leather, right?

No, it's kind of a waxy goop that you rub into the leather and rub off with a rag. An old towel works well.

You cannot immerse leather in water. It will be permanently ruined.

I always wondered why cows don't "get ruined" in the rain. :confused3

Do you have a tack store nearby? Stop by and look at their leather cleaners and conditioners. Usually you kind find a small sample size which should be perfect for your needs. Saddles get totally abused with dirt and rain but the specially made cleaners make them look like new. (ps. they also sell small white round sponges which are perfect for cleaning).

I was going to order it online, but there are several tack shops close to me so I think I will go in person.

Both Lexol and Leather Therapy are good brands. Or ask the tack shop people, they can help you too!

will the items work on a leather couch? We have a leather couch. Well i sat on it with my hair wet(wrapped in a towel a few times and sometimes it seems to smell. Dh doesnt smell it but i can especially when its really hot. What can i use to clean it so i dont smell the smell. Dh thinks i'm nuts but he sits in his recliner so he doesnt notice it.

oh and i wont be sitting on my couch with wet hair anymore-lol
