Can you use DVC points towards a regular resort reservation? Or can you apply points to one that you're already booked. If so, how does it work?

no. points and cash are completely separate deals.

if you pay extra to buy DVC directly, you can use your pts toward a regular wdw hotel room. you'll have to pay additional fees ($95 to start, $95 again if you make changes) and pay higher point costs for a hotel room than for a studio since you are trading out of the DVC system. here are some point charts:

http://advc.disney.go.com/media/dvc...5/disneycollection/2015-WDW-Pt-Cht-011315.pdf

as you'll notice, while it is an option, it's a pretty bad deal to do so.

Only the resorts included in The Disney Collection (so I think that's mods and deluxe that don't have DVC). And you couldn't apply.anything to what you already booked. They are two totally different systems and companies. You would have to cancel what you have and book what you want with points through DVC Member Services. There is also a $95 charge for doing this, it's considered going outside DVC. Generally it's a pretty poor use of points, economics-wise.

this changed fairly recently BTW. you can look at my link to see point costs for deluxes like GF, BWI and BC, as well as AoA.

Ahh yes, now I remember something like that when I was looking to buy direct from disney. Thanks for clearing it up!

You can stay at pretty much any resort except values.

I'm not so sure its that bad use of points. We want to go back to POR someday for sentimental reasons (it's where we went when the kids were babies) and once the kids don't travel with us we will use our points there. It is about the same points as a studio and has pretty much the same amenities and it is a resort we love as much as most deluxe so we see it as good for us once in a while.

I wouldn't stay at a Deluxe or even AOA this way far too many points but POR wasn't too bad

If you bought resale after March 2011, those points cannot be used for The Disney Collection.

Financially, yes, there is no doubt that it is a poor use of points. Generally your points can be rented for $11-14/pt. When you compare the needed points to stay at a moderate or a budget resort to the cash needed for the same stay, you will see that you will be better off renting those points and using that cash for the stay. Even better, you can often get the room for a discount, so you will have even more money in your pocket to pay for tickets, meals, airline, etc.
Many members who have bought direct and have the ability to use their points for these options prefer to rent their points because of the savings.

I used to do this a lot.

But.. when they added the $95 fee I quit. $95 is about what a Disney moderate is worth IMHO. So paying the fee and points was a rip off. Now if I can't get a DVC room I just pay for a "moderate" at $95 off site LOL!
