My daughter is getting an IPhone for Christmas and a friend has bought her a Napster giftcard. I am concerned that the only thing that can be used with the IPhone is the ITunes card. Anyone know?

I am heading out this morning and will need to pick up an Itunes card if it doesn't.

I've never seen a Napster card but if it allows her to download mp3s to her computer then she should be able to add them to her itunes library and then her phone. Itunes is NOT the only place to get music. Of 1,000s of songs/albums I own maybe 2 were purchased from itunes. (most were ripped from CDs) Hope that helps.

The Iphone is compatible with itunes exclusively. With itunes you can purchase music directly, or upload from existing CDs, but I don't believe you can share with another system due to the proprietary software.

the Napster card has a "Best Buy" logo in the upper right corner, so I assume it might be exclusive to them. Winrob, you mean you can copy music from wherever to your Itunes account. Also, by "ripping" a CD, do you just mean copying it to Itunes.

Again, never used a Napster card but if it's to purchase mp3s they can be added to itunes. It's a gift card not a system. People can buy music from Amazon, Wal mart, Rhapsody etc and add them to itunes. You can buy mp3s from anywhere and convert them to itunes.

Itunes will not upload music that you've downloaded from another service and stored on your computer. If you transfer that music to a CD, I believe you can then upload it to Itunes. Frankly, that is kind of exhausting, so I would just go with an itunes gift card.

Her friend already bought a $60 Napster card and it says it can not be returned! Anyone know what it can be used with?

If the GC is already purchased, she can just download the music via Napster and then put it on CDs to upload to Itunes. A few more steps in the process, but she'll still get there :)

Is it to buy mp3s though? If so you CAN put them into itunes.
Ripping CDs is converting your music to mp3s on your computer and then adding them to itunes. You can do it w/many programs but yes, itunes will do it and add to the library.

There is a list of mp3 players that napster is compatible with on their website.

Wait, I'm getting dizzy, lol. So Napster is proprietary then?

edited to add: This is what it says on the Napster Website

"Use your MP3 credits to download tracks from the Napster catalog, then play your tracks on any compatible device, including the iPod®, Zune®, and music-enabled cell phones. Napster automatically adds your MP3s to iTunes® or Windows Media Player®, so transferring music is a snap."

So you're good, she can use the card.

wenrobt, I think you and I are saying the same thing. You can get the songs into itunes, but you transfer onto CDs, and then into itunes. I am too lazy to do this, so I just use Itunes exclusively. I'm sure I am Apple's ideal customer, lol.

Updated based on wenrob's update:

I did not know that it would upload straight from Napster! Hooray for the OPs daughter, that makes life much easier!

Oh, I hope she isn't already off to get an itunes card. Come back, it'll work, lol!

Teacup, I am Apple's least favorite. I use my own music and never purchase from them.:rotfl:

It sounds like Teacup is still saying she will have to burn a CD first and then transfer to Itunes, rather than just being able to download music directly from Napster to her Iphone. I am not computer savvy and I am probably confused. Anyway, I bought a "App" card which I assume is something she will need. It says on the back it is used with Itunes. Geez, why can't they make it easy for us old folks! What is the difference in buying a song and an "MP3"? I thought an MP3 was the type of player????

An mp3 is a format. Basically a "condensed" version of the song. Most players use them. She will be able to use the Napster card for itunes without putting anything on a CD. I'm not too sure what Teacup is refering to. I know if you want to get stuff off of itunes that you bought from itunes then you would have to put it on a CD. I promise though, she'll be able to use the Napster card and get the songs on her phone.

edited to add: To be a little clearer, when she down loads the songs from Napster she will be given the choice to put them in itunes or Windows media. She just needs to select itunes and it will put them in her library. Does your DD have an ipod or other mp3 player? If she does she'll know what to do. If you know anyone who uses an ipod or mp3 player they can show you/her how to do it. If you need any help feel free to pm me. We have three iphones, two ipods and I also do my niece and nephews players for them. (sis is not "hip to it" lol)

edited again: If DD doesn't have itunes, down loading it will be the first order of business. She can get it from the Apple web site.

No, actually she does not have an Ipod (looks like both of us are behind the times), but I got one as a gift and purchased an Itune card. Well, it was a Coby player, not an Ipod Nano or such, and I cannot get the songs to the player. I opened the account on Itunes and downloaded the music to my PC, but no luck getting them to the player. Anyway, the reason I am saying all that is to let you know I do at least know how to get the Itunes account set up. However, I am not sure why you say she will have to put Itune songs on a CD, but not Napster ones? If I am getting on your nerves, just kindly say so! I need the IPhone for Dummies book!!

No trouble I'm happy to help.

What I mean is if they are bought from itunes and you want to move them to another program you have to burn them to a CD. Napster is not a program just somewhere to buy music, it will put the music right in itunes. Itunes is a program and a place to buy music. Right now you don't have to worry about that. (and never have to if you use only use itunes)

Go over to the left hand side where it says: Play lists. Right click on Play lists and choose 'make new play list.' Give the list a title such as BC's Tunes. Now go to the music and make sure the songs you want are check marked. Drag those songs over to the play list. Once you have all your songs there (make sure your player is plugged in) drag the play list onto your the icon that has your players name-this is right above play lists.

Try the above and let me know if you got it. I'll check back periodically.

got my playlist made, plugged in my player, but don't see it showing up above the playlist like you said....what now?
