We are debating if we should buy another memory card or just download pictures/movies from our digital camera onto a CD on the ship. We don't want to bring a laptop with us to do it in the room. Can you use the ship's computer to download pix? Do they charge for this? I know you have to pay for internet usage but I am not sure what the charge is just to download files from your card to a CD. Any help would be most appreciated.

you cannot access the towers in the internet lounge areas, but Shutters will burn your pics to a CD. However, I have heard of people deleting their memory sticks, only to find when they got home that their CD's won't work for whatever reason. My advice, and my plan of action, is to purchase an additional memory stick.

Shutters will transfer pics to CD for $14.95 I have heard of someone taking video streams with their camera & shutters did not transfer that to CD & they lost the video.

I vote for bringing laptop or buying additional memory cards.

I took an extra 1 gig memory card, an extra set of rechargable batteries and a charger.....Didn't use the extra memory but that was probably because my camera ate batteries at an alarming rate and I was often, at first, unable to take that shot I wanted until I changed batteries. I didn't use the large screen on the camera too often and was surprised at the power drain. I wish I had inquired about some kind of product that would have kept my lenses from fogging up from the humidity in Curacao. Most of my 7AM shots look like I took them from within a cloud, even though I kept wiping off the moisture...

In my 3-week trip I took 300+ pictures...a miserly number compared to others on the repo cruise.

An alternative is to purchase a memory card reader that can read your memory card and write to a USB memory device (like a thumb drive). That method seems to be working well for DD since the crew computer room has the same limitations about computer access that the internet cafe. Not sure about the cost but though I'd mention it as an option.

Hi All,

Thought I would way in on this one as I was wondering myself what I was going to do about saving pics so that I could reuse my media cards. I found a thing made by Apacer called "Apacer Disc Steno CP200 Combo CD Photo Burner DVDPlayer". It will allow you to take pics directly off of 7 different memory media stick types and will burn the pics directly to cd right then and there. It will also function as a dvd player and can be hooked up to a tv to view the pics on the photo cd it will burn on the tv screen.

Runs about $200 +/- and can usually be found on ebay or the like. It is also very small and compact (about the size of an average external cd drive. It has a rechargable battery built in and will also run off of ac. Coolest feature is the multiburning option which allows you to continue to write to a cd you have used it to burn, in multiple sessions without closing the cd, so that you can use all the available space on the cd. Cool, huh?

My best friend and I got together and got one for her FIL as an Xmas gift last year (in my family that would be referred to as an "ice cream maker". This applies to anything that is given as a gift that will also directly benefit the giver as much if not more as it will the receiver). My best friend's in-laws are the ones that are treating us all to our upcoming cruise so we wanted to do something nice for him and to ensure that we would also be able to save our pics without bringing a laptop.

We are planning to bring a whole bunch of blank cd's with us and will probably burn at least two copies of each set of pictures so that we can share pics with each other and so that we will have a backup cd if something should happen to the first (no, I'm not paranoid...no not me...).

They also sell media storage devices (kind of like a portable hard drive with a card reader attached) but all the ones that I have seen seem to be more expensive than the Apacer thing and also don't have the ability to view not only a cd but also a dvd. All in all, I think that (especially for the price) the Apacer Disc Steno is a great deal.

Hope this helps.

Take care all & have a great day!

I have an I/O Magic Digital Photo Library. It costs 150.00 and is a portable 20gb hard drive with various slots for different type of flash memory. You can find it iomagic dot com

Every night I would dump my cards and start fresh the next day.
