A co worker of mine who is also DVC member has an upcoming trip in 3 months that she needs to cancel. DH and I are thinking of going and would love to take their reservation...is there any way to do this so that they cancel and we book it with our own points? Can we call MS to do this? Or can we schedule a time to do a quick cancel and then we quickly book? Anyone done this?

MS might be able to do this. Call them and ask.

The other option is to just have your friend change her reservation to your name.

Argggg the only thing is that we would have to use our points because they want to cancel and keep their points.....would that still work??

You should be able to coordinate a cancel and rebook with them. Personally, I think trying to get Member Services to do this for you would be more difficult and have more risk of losing the reservation.

Really? How "real time" is a cancellation available to rebook? Do you risk losing the cancellation to a waiting list?

Yes - that is the problem because if they cancel the reservation, it really should go to fill a waitlist before you are able to book it. You never know until you call to ask I guess

Are your points the same resort? If the reservation was made before the 7 month window, trying to use another resorts points violates the 11 month advantage.

If you use the ressie would transferring your points to them work? Just a thought.

I have done something similar with my own points- cancelling a reservation made at 1 resort made with home resort points and changing to a different set of points- I did it a few weeks after the 7 month window at 2-3am timeframe so I had a better chance of obtaining the reservation myself.

You can try to do something like this as long as you won't get mad at them if you aren't the one to pick up the reservation- there is always the possibility that you won't be the one to pick up the room.

You could also simply use their reservation and transfer your own points into their account to make up for the ones you are using- that way you get the reservation and they keep points- although I don't know if you have the same resort or anything but at 3 months out points are points.

Cancellations are real-time, so the room would be available immediately. The waitlist has not, historically, grabbed nights at cancellation, but rather seems be processed manually.

It should be it doesn't. Personally I'd like them to hold cancelation for the WL but they haven't historically. In this situation the best way to do it, assuming it's not available otherwise, is to coordinate by phone or in person where the second party is ready to search at the second the first party cancels. This works with dining reservations as well.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Its a short trip but only 2 of the 5 nights are currently available. She wont know if she has to cancel until the end of the week anyways so we will see how it goes! This was just something I was wondering. Thanks everyone and have a great day!

You could have them put the res in your name and just transfer some of your points into their account.....

if transfers both ways are possible...this is the simplest solution.
One can only do one transfer per UY per master contract either IN or OUT. However, in this case one would only need to transfer one time, the reservation would basically be a rental paid for with the transfer. Of course they couldn't transfer banked or borrowed points in this scenario. There is some risk but if they are good friends the risk is minimal as long as the party with the reservation isn't having financial issues.
