Can you smoke on a balcony of a room that is nonsmoking?

My sis smokes and she's coming with us on vacation. I told her I'd have to get her a smoking room. Problem is that might make their room far away from ours. And I'm definitely not taking a smoking room. I wouldn't be able to stand the smoke for more than 5 seconds.

Anyway, she wanted to know if she could smoke
on her balcony of the nonsmoking room. I told her probably not because it might intefer with other vacationers who didn't smoke and it would bother them.

But she wanted me to ask anyway. Does anybody know the rules about this??

I remember our 98 stay in the Comtemporary tower. It was non-smoking. The room next to us, the male went out to smoke on the balcony. The smoke kept swirling onto our side. I mentioned to him that it was non-smoking. He looked at me and hawked up a big one and spit over the side and kept smoking. We were only on the 7th floor and I saw it land next to a white limo parked below us. I mentioned it to the desk the next morning and that night they were gone. I'm not sure if they checked out or got moved though.

As a courteous jesture to other guest staying in the same nonsmoking building I think it would be inappropriate for your sister to be smoking on the balcony of the non smoking buildings. There are smoking buildings within the same locations as the non smoking buildings. for instance we like to stay in buildings 53 or 54 which are non smoking. I believe the buildings just across the way 55 & 56 are smoking buildings. Just my 2 cents worth.

Non-smoking rooms have non-smoking balconies. I understand your dilemma figaro, as I have a couple of smokers in my family, but smoking on a non-smoking balcony could really annoy your fellow DVCers. Plus the fact that it might stink up your room as well.

That's what I figured....I certainly wouldn't want anybody smoking next to me...I know I'd complain to a CM about it. I just curious about the "Official" word on it.

When I'm on vacation I tend to be very courteous to other people's situations, extra quiet at night, etc. I also would hope other people would extend this policy towards me too.

I'll definitely be telling my sister that she can't do that because she'll be kicked out of the room. (Hey, what does she know) LOL!!!

As a smoker myself, I would not feel comfortable smoking on a non-smoking balcony. I like to relax and enjoy my ciggs, and feel self conscious enuff going into a non smoking area after having a cig, not to mention the smell off my clothes walking into a non smoking room. You may want to run that past your sis. That is just my opinion as it relates to MY comfort

Unfortunately, my sis doesn't always "think" before she acts. It's not malicious... she just has her head in the clouds too often. That's why I need to tell her that they will eject her from the room. That'll solve all problems!!! LOL

Figaro, much to others dismay regarding smoking on the balcony of a non-smoking unit, the front desk will tell you that it IS allowed. We had a GV and my dh, his friend, my ds' godparents ALL smoked. I did NOT want to get a smoking room however, because my ds has asthma and I don't particularly care for smoke inside. I don't allow people to smoke in my house for that very reason. It STINKS!

This has been debated a million times here, and unless you get complaints from other non-smoking units, I say your sister can smoke out on the balcony. Sorry, everyone.

wow!!!! I'm really surpised to hear that. I (however sad I am for my sister's lungs)don't think I'll tell her that though. I'll just get her a smoking room and she'll have to deal with the fact that she might be farther away from our room. Maybe that will be an incentive for her to quit!!!! LOL

Not meaning to offend anyone, but....we stay in nonsmoking units because even a trace or residue of smoke is irritating and offensive to us. If someone nexrt door was smoking on the balcony , we would notice , be upset and probably complain to the main desk. Your sister would not be doing anything illegal by smoking on the balcony, but it would be inconsiderate and offensive to many people who either choose or need to be in a no smoke environment. Wpuld she be willing to take a walk when she needs to smoke??? Also, be sure that she is careful in the parks which are now nonsmoking except for specially designated areas. I'm sure you will figure out a way for you both to have a great time, after all, it is Disney World ! Good luck !!

Once when we stayed at OKW in a non-smoking building, we opened the door to our bedroom to listen to the fountain and enjoy the fresh air one morning. In about 30 seconds we could smell smoke coming into our room. DH went to check and sure enough, someone was smoking on the balcony. Could not remember if they were below us or next to us. Needless to say we needed to shut our door. It was very disappointing for us. We were not sure of the rules, so we did not complain but if it ever happens again I think I will.

I've already given her the "smoking" talk about how the parks are VERY VERY Controlled and that she has to go to designated spots which are very few and rare and that CMs will tell her to exstinguish her cigarette immediately if she is not in the appropriate area. I'm actually panicking over this a little bit because I don't want it to become an issue...on top of having to stop every ten minutes for her to have a cig. She doesn't travel very much so is unaware that all states in general (except for New York) don't have a lot of smokers nor cater to them. Especially WDW. I know she'll want to light up at the bus stops, etc. I don't know if she'll be able to do this.

Hopefully it will be okay though.

Again, I wouldn't want somebody smoking next to me at our non smoking building. I'd get upset and complain to a CM immediately. I just wasn't sure what the official rule was.

I've posted this before and I guess I'll post it again...

WDW wants to try its best to please all its guests. If you call the front desk complaining about someone smoking on a balcony that's connected to a non-smoking room the CM will probably tell you it's against the rules. If you call the front desk asking if it's o.k. for you to smoke on the balcony of a non-smoking room the CM will probably say it's o.k.

A couple of things to think about -

- Just because your room is non-smoking doesn't mean that the room next to, above or below yours is non-smoking. The person smoking outside on their balcony may be in a smoking-allowed room.

- What if someone is walking outside, on the sidewalk, smoking a cigarette, and the wind is blowing in your direction, and you can smell it on the baloncy of your non-smoking room? Is that o.k.?

I do know at OKW they designate buildings not room to smoking. So it's not possible to have one smoking and one nonsmoking room next to each other.

should be that if you are in a non-smoking room/unit at OKW that the entire building is non-smoking.

Common sense would also make anyone old enough to smoke realize that you should not smoke on the balcony or patio of a non-smoking room/unit. That being said some people have never let common sense guide their approach to anything in life. The people who have chosen these units did so for a reason. I'm sure we'll hear about the poor folks who were just randomly assigned a n/s unit when they really needed a smoking one. This is not what the orginal poster asked about.

It's about time they banned smoking throughout WDW, the extra costs that these addicts cause with their addiction is ridiculous, the nicotine stained AC vents, walls, ceilings, furniture and the foul odor, not to mention the extra health costs we have to pay, and these POOR VICTIMS have the nerve to file multi million dollar lawsuits when they knew full well from warnings that it is harmful, and they don't care that the second hand smoke is even more harmful to the rest of us who don't smoke.e

I agree that it's unpleasant (and annoying) to have ciggie smoke waft up when you are out on your balcony in a non-smoking building.

Possible compromise if you are at OKW...your sis can go out the front of the unit and either smoke on the landing (if she cleans up after herself) or have a seat on one of the benches in the "courtyard" entrance areas and have her cigarette. I know it's probably pointless but remind her how many more WDW trips she'll be able to enjoy if she uses the trip to start not smoking at all!

I know we don't like smoke any where around us..it makes us gag.

I don't think YOU have to pay when those people file those law suits...its US that still smoke! And while your limiting our rights I would like to see NO alcohol on the premises. I hate the smell and when people drink too much they interupt my relaxation, not to mention the fact that I don't like to be on the road after dark.

One thing you miss here is that no one is allergic to someone else drinking alcohol, but we are to someone elses smoke. If someone has smoked in a non-smoking room ahead of me, I can tell imediately. I wheeze, get stuffed up, can't sleep, and sometimes have an asthma attack. Not only are these things capable of ruining my vacation, but I can end up spending it in the hospital as well. Anyone who wants to ruin their health by their own decision can do so, but don't ruin mine too when I have no choice.
