Can you save web-based email?

Ok, that's probably the wrong term. Right now I use the AOL browser simply to read my email and I like the fact that it saves the email to my computer. Well, that and it has all my bookmarks in it that I'm too lazy to move to Firefox and IE.

I don't like using www.aol.com to read the email because it doesn't save it to my computer. Or at least I haven't found a way to.

So, if I switch to gmail or some other email address like that where you read the email on a website, can you save the email FOREVER on their website or in your computer somewhere?

I finally found a program that simply moves all my existing AOL saved email, my 100s of favorites & filing cabinet & I could get rid of the AOL browser.

2 other things I really like about the AOL browser for my email is that it does a really good job of filtering spam compared to others I've seen. And I like that it does not automatically download attachements. You tell it to download if you want to d/l it. I have 2 senior citizens who are constantly sending me attachements for things that can be viewed on sites like youtube without having to download. They also always have viruses & I don't want to get viruses from them.

The thought of having to change my email address everywhere kind of stinks though. I've had that @aol.com forever.

wish I could help you with saving it to your computer, but I haven't ever looked into it as I don't see the benefit to saving email on the computer, you can always get into your web based mail, no matter what browser you use, as long as you have your password, that way it isn't taking up room on your computer. Though I know there are programs like outlook you can route the email through.

Web based email programs will never delete your mail for you, the only way mail ever gets deleted from a web based email program is if you do it yourself.

That's very good to know. I thought maybe they had a time limit or space limit for saving email online. I'll have to look deeper then to see if AOL saves it online because I've yet to notice it.

First, there may be a plug in or add-on to be able to import your favorite AOL bookmarks to Firefox or IE. Firefox automatically imports bookmarks from IE. (Although alphabetically & not in the same order as it was in IE. I ended up moving several bookmarks around. That was a pain. )

Gmail does save EVERY piece of email you want saved. That was it's biggest advertised feature when it first launched. You get something like 2GB to store ALL your emails on it's website.

People even use it as a FREE remote backup to save critical documents, files & pictures. Unless Google falls into the ocean, the files should be securely saved on their systems. People simply create another free email account (or more,) create an email, attach a file and email it to the same address. The file size you an attach is incredibly large, too. :thumbsup2 I've never had a problem sending a big attachment, unless the other side can't open it because of their own email service.

I LOVE  Gmail. I can travel anywhere and log in on someone else's PC and read my own mail. I also like the fact that if I give up Verizon as my Internet provider, I don't have to switch email addresses again, the way I did when I quit AOL.

I had the paid service back then, and they would start billing my charge card if I logged into my AOL email. They didn't do email forwarding and they purposely don't close an email address, so you get people writing you who don't know you no longer use that address.

Oh, and Gmail has the BEST spam filter I've ever had. Yahoo is a complete joke. So is Verizon. AOL would let a lot of crap through. I rarely, like once every 3 months, have to click the Spam button to report a spam email on Gmail. And once it's reported, I never get it again.

I do use AOL.com to view my email when on laptop or not at home. Laptop doesn't have AOL browser on it. So I'm used to using web-based to get email.

I just looked closer at AOL.com & it does have email saved back from Nov. Not sure why nothing further back than that however.

I wouldn't need to give up the @aol.com address. I think you can even get it send to other places like Outlook, but not sure if I can get it sent to gmail.

One thing I noticed that I DON'T like about the AOL.com version is no matter how much I extended the email subject area, I couldn't read enough of it from one particular site I get lots of email from. That would be a pain in the butt for me to have to open it to see if I want to read it. They have long subject titles & the important parts were showing. It also was just slower online - even though I have fast cable connection - than it is when you view email in AOL browser.

Guess I'll go check out gmail now.

Having a miserable time finding an email name that isn't already taken. ugh!

Wait till you have to choose a password. I think they want at least 8 characters now so people can't hack in. :headache:
