We're travelling to Africa soon :), and the requirement is one duffle and one backpack only (19 day trip). Our duffles are not on wheels (want it that way, can't have the frames). So we're left with carrying around heavy duffles thru the airports. So instead of renting the carts at the airports, I thought it may be a good idea to buy one ourselves. I took a look at Amazon, but I thought I'd try to get a good recommendation here if you own one you like. Thanks!

Would you take it on the plane with you? Sorry, I've just never heard of buying your own cart and I'm just curious how it would work. (Also, I'm sure you've thought about this and you know the situation, but I'd think you'd have to be prepared to carry your bag a lot during your trip, so ideally you wouldn't want to make it too heavy anyway.)

Yes we'd take it on the plane, but leaving it at the first hotel in Nairobi before leaving on safari. Picking it up on our very last night before heading home.

My mother bought me a very cheap, lightweight, hollow tubed, folding luggage cart like this decades ago, and I still have it. I use it for everything from stacking & lugging heavy cardboard boxes on the sidewalks here, to bungeeing my soft-sided duffle when I travel on planes and don't want to take my rolling carry-on. It folds up very compactly and is then easy to carry anywhere. It also fits through the airport scanners, with my duffle still bungeed to it. (I can easily take the bungees off if they need to see inside.) I bought extra bungee cords for it at the dollar store, hardware section, to wrap anything to the back of the frame.

I think that the point of asking for duffles and backpacks is to ensure that you can carry what you bring. If you can't then pack less. It's warm in Kenya and warm weather clothes don't take up that much room. You should be able to get away without needing a huge duffel.

Actually, that's not the case. The guides/assistants carry the duffles. The point of duffles is to fit them into the Land Rovers, going from camp to camp.

Thanks!

My husband and I went to S. Africa twice; we were limited to soft luggage, and on weight, but one side of our duffle bags could be "rigid" with the wheels on them. But we flew in small planes from safari camp to safari camp. That might be the difference.

Yes, we've been given clear instructions that we cannot have any kind of frame, which the wheels are attached to. I'm all set with a nice Eagle Creek duffle, it's just carrying it around the airport is the issue.

This probably isn't helpful, but I got this image in my head and had to say something. I guess I've lived around military bases for a long time. Many times you see them traveling with a large duffle and a back pack. They wear the back pack normally and they carry the duffle in the front. They put their arms thru the handle straps and carry it on their chest. Kind of a reverse (large) backpack.

Ha ha:) thanks for that, but the visual is killing my back already! I picked up my duffle last night and it was heavy, and I haven't even packed any clothes yet. But thanks for the tip!
