Can you really order two entrees in MDR??

As you can tell, a wide range of responses are possible for a request for extra items, seconds, etc. On one cruise, on the first night when I wanted to order 2 appetizers, the server said "No. One, one, and one" pointing to the sections on the menu. I laughed and said how funny he was being. Then I found out - no joke - he would not get more than one thing for us from each category. That server was one of a kind, fortunately, as on our other cruises the servers have ranged from good to super outstanding.

I would have made sure he got one, one, and one only dollar as his tip. Plus I also would have climbed the ladder. Never been on cruise but Disney has always taken care of any issue. But sometimes you have to head up the ladder a time or two.

In my opinion if you're going to have wait staff that do magic tricks and play with the kids then they all need to do this. Our first cruise was so amazing we couldn't wait to get back on that ship and a huge part of that was the relationship our serving team formed with us! We were so excited and then we showed up at dinner on night one and I knew we were in for a completely different experience. This team couldn't even get our kids dessert out on time even though they knew every night the kids would be leaving with the kids club. We arrived on time every single night and ordered our kids food right away and every night the kids left and they would bring out their mickey bars to 4 empty chairs and look surprised. The kids couldn't wait to leave because the serving team barely spoke to them let alone did anything special for them. Where as tables next to us were getting a magic show every night. What was so funny and awkward was on the night we were to fill out their precious survey they pulled our their magic tricks, problem was the kids were already gone so they were doing this weird awkward and forced routine for a table of 6 adults who as this point just wanted to be done. Did we still have a fabulous time, of course, its a disney cruise how could we not. However, it was enough for us to jump ship and try something new next year.

Fruit is on every kids menu as either an appetizer, side or dessert. Not bringing a customer something that's listed on the menu, means they are not doing their job.

I had an issue on one of our Dream cruises where the server refused to bring me the plain chicken that's listed on the menu. I told him I didn't want any of the other entrée offerings that night because I didn't like any of them. He refused and I literally sat there and did not have an entrée (after having a bowl of French onion soup for my appetizer).

Poor servers are present on DCL, and yes, refusing to bring fruit for a child when it is a common item listed on the menus makes them not a very good server.

I would of made sure that server got a really nice tip maybe a penny.

What is the recourse if you get a server who is "less than ideal"? That is my big fear. We've saved for years for this and want it to be a magical experience. I'm the type who hates conflict and am a very compliant customer, I've only ever sent food back in a restaurant once and that was because the chicken was pink, and even then I felt so bad! But this is a Bucket-list, once in a lifetime trip so I guess if there was some way to get things fixed I'd have to step up to the plate and do something - but what?

Speak to the head server. They should be able to address the issues with your server and assistant server. If there isn't improvement, then go to guest services and ask from whom you can request a change in your serving team.

I've had only had one experience where the serving team was less than what I desired. They still were fine with me ordering additional sides and extra entrees and appetizers. They just didn't always remember to bring everything I ordered. They would correct it when I brought it to their attention, but it became a joke with my tablemates because it only seemed to happen with my order. Everyone would order a salad and everyone would get their salad but me. I'd ask where my salad was and they'd say "you didn't order one." My tablemates would all chime in with "Yes, she did. We heard her order it." So then I'd get my salad.

In theory you can order everything on the menu. Some have reported back to say they tryed too and did in deed get everything.......personally I hate the idea of wasting all that food.

We have ordered 2 of something no problem. In fact my wife did 3 weeks ago on the Fantasy, ordered 2 appetizers, no problem.

One thing we have always found on DCL is excellent service. This last time is was especially so in Palos with *Deborah*.......

We have never ordered two of anything but I find it odd that our servers have never even offered that to us. DH is a picky eater and often orders just an entrée (salad, appetizer, or dessert). I have always thought it would be nice if they would at least ask if he would like a double portion. Or something from the kids menu for an appetizer/dessert.

Someone earlier mentioned being on time to dinner, and we have found that to be a huge impact on what the serving team is able to do for us. We're the type that typically orders multiples of all courses (at least one party member, that is), and have never had a problem with it ourselves. We did have a conversation with our server this past trip about this actually, as he had a table that was consistently late to dinner (like, 30-45 minutes late) every night. He said it makes it much harder on the serving team, as they're finishing up with most of their tables and then have to start with appetizers for the new table. Additionally, being first seating, they have to clear the room out at some point and get it ready for the second seating. So by showing up late, it was cutting down on the time they had to do so. He said it was entirely up to the head servers, but it is possible for the head servers to refuse service to someone who showed up exceptionally late or, more likely, to only offer them the main course, no appetizers or dessert. He didn't say how often this happened, but that it did happen sometimes when people showed up extremely late for the meal. I think they definitely appreciate those that show up on time - even if you do order multiple appetizers or entrees :)

on our last cruise in February there were 2 times that I had asked for substitutions and you would have thought that I asked them to go inland to find me my food. The head waiter acted like I was making his life very difficult. He definitely made it seem like any changes to the original menu were not easy for them to accommodate. Really missed our serving team from our first cruise after this last one.

my DGD, then 6, is a very picky eater....VERY.
I knew she wouldn't eat the veggies which were on her kids menu and asked to substitute green beans or edamame or I forget what else....maybe it was corn.
That was impossible.
He was not an average server (as I have explained on multiple posts over the years) but just a passable (borderline incompetent) server. And yes, I did politely pass this along to the floor manager...Since then, I had someone pass along that they have had him as their server and thought he was just wonderful. I mean, he was naice and all that.

Maybe he has found his groove but I will not be served by him on our next cruise, thankfully, since he is on a different ship............

we have never had an issue. Kids eating off the adult menu or vice versa. Ordering multiples or maybe an entrée as an appetizer to share. Someone we were travelling with ordered 3 entrees at Palo to have everyone try.

We are thinking about doing a disney cruise. I was wondering if any of you guys are vegatarians? If so was there many options? My biggest complaint about disney world is there are very few vegatarian options anywhere. I was truly shocked that most quick service and sit down resturants had a very limited menu for me. I literally lived on fries and Mickey pretzels for a week.

You can see the various menus on DCL here:

That way you can decide if your choices are good enough.

We cruised with a group of 13. The first night we had creme brulee. The Aussie of the group asked if we could have it everynight, and if so bring 9 of them. The
waiter said sure..... and every night they brought us 9 of them! Plus we all ordered dessert too!!

I couldn't decide between the steak and lobster mac and cheese... so I just asked for a small bowl of the mac and cheese, no problem. Have also done this in Enchanted with ordering an entree and asking for a side order of scallops(which was also an entree) on the side.

Only once have we ever had an issue ordering something not normally on the menu.

My daughter loves calamari, after reading various posts I found out you can ask for something every seating (only exception is night you ask). We have asked for calamari every cruise and never had an issue (probably about 5 cruises).
Couple years back I was told by out server that the kitchen/chef could not do this. I explained I never had an issue in the past X amount of cruises. But she said basically it wasnt going to happen.

No big deal....

The HEAD of all the dining rooms was the X manager of Palo, who became our friend. He came over to see us specifically (love the Disney treatment :sunny:) He asked us how everything was and we said fine and explained the calamari issue (was not going to make this a big deal). He laughed and said of course they could....

This server was our worse in 11 cruises, Im pretty sure she never went to the kitchen to ask.....

Most menus have a section of vegetarian dishes. You can check out the menus here:

Asking for extra appetizers, entrees, desserts - yes. Asking to make something not on the menu - no. Can't imagine the havoc that could create if multiple tables were to do this.

We are heading out on the Fantasy in twenty days, our first cruise! Can you request a service team? Just curious.

You can call DCL and request a specific server, or assistant server, or head server. It's a good idea to only ask for one. If you ask for two (or all three) as a team, it's quite possible that they are no longer a team, due to vacations, promotions, end of contracts, whatever. Asking for more than one confuses DCL and they don't know which to give you, so you often wind up with neither.

That said, it's not really necessary to request servers, most of them are top notch. Yes, there are some who are not so stellar, but they are few.

We just got back from our Fantasy cruise and our server was so in tuned with what my wife and I liked that he was giving us 2-3 appetizers, 2-3 entrees and 2-3 desserts each night! We never asked for the extra food. He just brought it to us. He was by far our the best server we've ever had so we definitely tipped extra.
