Another way to explain it would be expiring script if you ever served in the military or watched MASH- every once in a while they color of the script would change. It had to be exchanged or it expired.

I do know how your points use online can look so odd. Things were processed exactly the way you mentioned them. Since you did not understand use years, they pronbably just processed what you asked. They did not explain how to best manage your points.
Also can happen when you have a reservstion and then make changes to it. If one was not cancelled before the next was made they might have made sure availability was there before cancelling the old res. That would have them crossing into points to make it work.
