Can you pay to upgrade at check in?

Hi - we've booked a stay at the AKL through Virgin in the UK for our honeymoon. We could only afford a standard view at the time - but I have seen the pictures on allears and really don't want to be looking at the parking lot!

I don't to try and change through Virgin as for reasons I shan't go into we've changed our booking about 6 times already and get charged an admin fee everytime!

Can I just ask if there are any savannah rooms available on check in and pay the difference to upgrade?

If it is avaliable they will be more than happy to upgrade you at check in. Make sure you let them know you are willing to pay the difference, sometimes they will just upgrade you with no charge (you never know), but expect to pay the difference.

If you want to upgrade, call a few days in advance and ask for the person that assigns rooms. They can do it in advance if it is available.

I would ask your booking agent if they have indicated on your itinerary that you are on your honeymoon. The agent who booked my honeymoon in 1999 did that -- and upon check-in the CM said "You're here on your honeymoon -- let's get you an upgrade". And, the best part is...it was free.

If they don't know when you check in, be sure to tell them you are on your honeymoon and you had heard they will sometimes upgrade you to a different room. See if that works...if not, offer to pay for an upgrade.

One other thing you could do...fax the hotel 3-4 days prior to your arrival with a request in writing...I did that for a solo trip I am taking tomorrow. Told them I was traveling by myself and was hoping to get a room close to the "hub"...they upgraded me with no charge.

We also did this, i found the hotel staff very helpful. Why dont you try phoning the hotel and saying you are coming on your honeymoon, is there anything special they can offer?

Thanks for the tips guys I'll give them a call and see what they can do - I don't mind paying but a free upgrade would be fantastic :0)
