Can you leave your camera in the car in June?

We will be going to WDW the first week of June and are planning on taking a "break" at a water park before having dinner at 'Ohana's. I was just wondering if it is advisable to leave my Canon S3 in the car while we're at the park. We definately will want it for later that night. Will it hurt anything?

If I were you I'd just rent a locker for the day and keep it in there. It can get to be 120 degrees or more inside a car, so I wouldn't chance it.

We ate at Bomas on our last trip. We walked around and I took photos around the resort while waiting for our reservations. Then I just took my camera with us to dinner.

The temperature inside a car left in the sun can get really high, 140+ is no problem in Florida. The trunk is much cooler than the interior but if you must leave a camera in the car place it in an insulated cooler. Cover the cooler or place it so it is not in direct sunlight.

I agree with the cooler idea, I've done that already in July and August, I also placed 1 or 2 of those blue ice things in the cooler to keep it cool

I have used a cooler b4...

But was afraid of using the plastic ice packs, any condensation issues?

actually when I usde those I had a smaller camera bag and put the whole bag in the cooler, with my larger bag I used 2 garbage bags, which I put my camera bag in, plus either the plastic ice things or a bag of regular ice, then closed the bag, since my gear was in the camera bag it didn't really get cold, but also didn't get hot due to the ice...

..no condensation issues..


also a car trunk doesn't get nearly as hot as the car interior,

I keep digital thermometers in my car interior and in my trunk, when the car interior is as high as 120-140 the trunk remains around 80 or so

I've done that when on road trips in Southern California and Nevada and it worked great! I stored my cameras, camcorder and music players in there and they all survived the intense heat. Just get an ice cooler that has a tray on top and set the blue ice thingie on top wrapped in a small towel so moisture doesn't get near the equipment and you'll be good to go!

I NEVER leave my camera out of my sight when I am on vacation, so leaving it in the car would be totally out of the question for me. It can drive my family crazy...for instance, we arrived in Naples, FL last night and went to PF Changs for dinner..my husband, two kids, my camera bag and me. Part of the reason is the cost of the gear, but most of the reason is that my camera and pictures are precious to me. I've heard so many stories of cars being broken into...there are alot of icky people out there...why take the risk? JMHO

I understand your concern, but realistically the odds of a home burglary are just as great if not greater than those for a car break in


that's why I insure my gear as a rider on my homeowners policy, the cost is generally 10-20 dollars per thousand dollars of gear

I agree with adding a rider to your homeowners policy...it is money well spent, especially if you have expensive gear. But, I respectfully disagree with your comments about break-ins. I know many people who have had their car broken into or stolen in very public places...restaurant parking lots, movie theater parking lots, store parking lots, but I know no one who has ever had a home break in. I think car break-ins are more prevalent. And although insurance might cover the loss of property, it can't replace the pictures that were in a stolen camera. For me, it isn't worth the risk.

actually if you're in the kind of neighborhood where a car breakin is likely, you're also at risk of being mugged so carrying a visible camera bag puts you at risk....

why not just carry your cards and leave the bag in the trunk..

I honestly don't see where you were personally insulted, but I do agree that car break-ins are more prevalent in many areas than home break-ins and certainly muggings. Car break-ins are not uncommon in the suburban area in which I live; home break-ins are infrequent but do occur on occasion; muggings are practically unheard of.

So as not to stray off topic, I'd say that the trunk is safer wrt both temperature and theft-potential.
