Can you learn to snorkel on ship?

Is there a mini-course on the ship to teach us just the basics? I would really like to try, but not much of a water person. I'd like to get DS10 into it also. Can you snorkel with contacts? If you can't, there's not much point, since all I could see are maybe the "great whites" LOL. Thanks.

Samsma,

We just decided that we were going to snorkel on our cruise. So we went to Target bought a kit for $14.99 and have been trying it out at the YMCA pool.

My DD6 caught on real fast and DD4 the mask is too big, but we will try again.

It really is not that hard. The hard part is finding a pool to use it in. Here is an article that gives you tips (works for both kids and adults).

Good Luck

thanks for the link. We're looking into it, too. Are there shallow areas in which to snorkel, or is it all deep as described at Castaway Cay?

On all the cruise ships my DH and I have been on, they give you a short course when you get to the snorkel area and get your equipment. If you're renting just the snorkel equipment for the day, they have (at least on other cruise lines) a short course when you rent the equipment.

I have contact lenses and have never had a problem snorkeling with them. Just make sure your mask is air tight. They show you how to do this. I have gotten water under my mask a couple of times but find that it isn't that bad, at least, not any worse than witout contacts. I always bring an extra pair but I've never lost one or had to replace them because of snorkeling.

The first time we went, I was nervous and my DH was doubly nervous because he doesn't like deep water. But with the vest and the salt water, you don't go under water unless you want to. I think you and your DS10 will really enjoy it.

They did have a snorkling demonstration on the Magic. It was on the second sea day at about 1:30 in the afternoon up at the Goofy pool. Check with guest services when you get on board and ask them when it's scheduled for your sailing.

On our last 7 day cruise, they had a snorkel class at the pool area. I had never snorkeled before, and found the info. most helpful. They even taught you how to pick the correct mask and fins.

I used the information I learned in class, went snorkeling in an excursion and at Castaway, loved it!!!!

CC isn't all deep. You walk into the snorkel area from shore, and there are 3 trails(I think 3) to follow if you want to. And there are grassy reefs that you can stand on to take a break. I only gets really deep way, way out where the sunken mickey and sub are.

Thanks everybody. That leaves another question. If we go on the Trunk Bay excursion, can DH stay on the beach with DD4 while we just come back and forth to the beach? Or do they want everyone to participate since space might be limited?
