Cold water method or hot water method for hard boiling eggs?

One of us feels strongly that eggs should not be added to the pot until the water boils.
The other firmly believes in adding the eggs to the cold water & heating everything together.

Betty Crocker was of no use. I looked it up in her cookbook and she lists both methods.

Both methods are fine. There is no right or wrong way.

Now, I add the eggs to cold water, bring to a boil, turn off the heat, cover with a lid, and let them sit for 15-20 minutes depending on how large the egg is.

They have always come out perfect this way. When I use the "heat" method, I tend to overcook or undercook more often.

:confused3 I always put them in before boiling the water. I have cracked my share of eggs by dropping them in the water as well as burned my self when the boiling water splashed whil dropping. But I am not much of a cook.

I use "Henrietta Hen" and get perfect eggs every time. I bought it at Bed Bath & Beyond (or some place like that). DH uses it to make soft boiled eggs sometimes, too.

I use the cold water method. I tend to crack too many of them when adding to boiling water.

cold water. Although it wouldn't matter if the eggs were at room temp. Otherwise, they are much more apt to crack, due to temp. change.

I think you answered your own question. ;) Six eggs, or 1/2 dozen, either is correct.

I put them in cold water, start them boiling, shut off burner, & let them sit (covered) for 20 minutes. It's sort of funny that you're having a marital dispute over hard boiling methods. Is this grounds for divorce?

Adding cold eggs to boiling water is likely to make the shell crack.

cold water. The air pocket will expand to quickly and crack the shell if you drop a cold egg into boiling water.

OMG, are they fighting about coffee too??? :rotfl: J/K.

definitely start with cold water. bring to boil, take off of heat, cover and let sit for 12 minutes, then rinse with cold water.

Get one of those Egg McMuffin toaster things and you don't have to worry about it. They are GREAT!

if you are boiling eggs and don't want the shells to crack (like for easter)-put a small towel on the bottem of the pot before you fill it with water. it cushions the eggs so that when they are moving around due to the water boiling they are less likely to crack.

I put them in cold, bring them to a rolling boil, then turn off the heat and let them sit for 15 minutes before plunging them into cold water.

I always get perfectly cooked eggs with no ring around the yolk.

I'm so sorry that I find this amusing, but I was at a party once & the hosts got into a heated "dispute" over the correct way to make sloppy joes/barbecues. Apparently sloppy joes & barbecues are similar but have completely different recipes. So they each made their own version - one made sloppy joes & the other made barbecues. :rotfl:

They seemed quite similar to me & the rest of the guests & this caused the hosts to argue even more about the exact composition, cooking method, & name of the food. Thank god there was plenty of liquour at the party! :thumbsup2

So I'm guessing the marital "dispute" over hard boiled eggs is not really over cooking methods.
