Can you have AOL without cable TV?

We currently have AOL for our computer provider and Time Warner Cable for our TV. I have seriously been thinking about canceling the cable TV to free up more money to pay down other outstanding bills. We may eventually get it back.
My Dh says that we cannot cancel the cable TV because then we will not have the cable needed for the computer. I don't really see what one has to do with the other, but I am not a techie.
Can someone have AOL for their computer provider if they do not have cable TV?

I have had AOL for over 10 years and never had cable modem to connect always went through the regular land-line connection/dial up. Only bundled the phone/cable tv/internet connection when we moved a yr & 1/2 ago. Now I connect through the cable with Broadband. Much faster and doesn't tie up the phone line. I can understand the need to save money. In this house $$ very tight too but it's cheaper for us to pay the one bill (we have Bright House Networks about $120.00 month and the AOL bill is about $25.00 mos.) Doing it seperately the Verizon phone bill alone was running higher than that.

Have DH call AOL direct and he will be reassured

Last I heard, AOL had two services - a free service that you can use if you connect to the internet some other way (DSL/cable) and a service that you pay for that connects you to the internet. We use their free service because we have a DSL connection.

Yes I remember that too but I still pay for their service because I use the maximum amount of screen names ( I think 5 different email addresses) they allow & I was afraid I would lose some...even if AOL assures me I won't I can't take the chance (one address for friends one for business contacts/job applications one for kids in military seperate from other one for eBay..I was so tired of "weeding" through all the email :rotfl2:)

cable "tv" has nothing to do with your internet, HOWEVER if you have cable "internet" through your cable company, it will affect it. I don't know about your area but some companies offer DSL service through your phone line that you can get and then aol is free.

If you have an outside connection (cable or dsl) you are not using aol's server to dial in (56k) so they offer (2) packages; FREE or I believe $9.95 which allows you to connect with your high speed connection or 56k if you go out of town. I've had aol for "free" for the past 5+ yrs.

I have had aol for over 13 years now.. been using the free bring you own access plan since they started it.. maybe 5 years ago? I have the max amount of emails. There is no sense to pay for it when its now free. You dont lose anything. I still log in the traditional way with their software and I have verizon DSL

Your welcome. You should just be able to make the change online. When your away from home and want to check your mail just log into aol.com and do it that way.

No worries. I have high speed internet through the cable company, and free AOL (boy, that was a shock - going directly from dial-up to high-speed!), and I still have all seven of my AOL screen names.

I wouldn't even call - the last I heard, they were still doing the hard-sell pitch to keep their paying customers.

I just changed my level of service myself, online. No problem.

I did too..I had paid on 3/22 out of the checking account so there is no way they'll take anything 4/22 I gave them enuff notice right? Sorry OP I think your thread got hijacked

Correct. My billing date was, um, the 21st of each month. I'd gotten my internet installed on the 20th, so I went online that day and changed to free AOL. They did stop billing me.

Does anyone know if you also have the option of saving your e-mails on your account if you switch to the free service? I've been afraid of taking that route because I need to save all my e-mails for my business e-mail account.

Yes, you keep all your e-mails - but I haven't figured out how to get my favorites back :(

I do have saved mail going back to 2007, though.
