Can you get the food plain at CG?

I want to try CG for my next trip but we are pretty much plain meat and potatoes eaters. I see on the menus on Deb's site that you can get the oak-fired beef filet but then it goes on to explain that it has beans and sauce etc. on it. Can you order the food plain and basically get just a steak? :confused3 What do you think? Has anybody done this?

TIA,

Loralie

I always order the tamarind BBQ sauce on the side. (Not a BBQ sauce fan) no problem. Then it's just an oak-fired steak. Very delicious.

With all due respect, I think I would avoid California Grill if I wanted plain food. We ate there in August and thought it was fantastic but I think there are better places for plain food.

I agree, esp if youre going to pay all that money for all the bells and whistles to make it "non-plain" food.

I also agree. If you just want basic food I would not suggest the California Grill. You would be spending a lot of money and likely not be happy.

I know what you are saying but I thought if I went at fireworks time it would make up for the food. Everyone raves about it so I wanted to try it but like I said in the Original Post, my family and I are more of plain eaters. I guess it is a little too much to do for the fireworks.

Thanks,

Loralie

If you like plainer food & want a nice fireworks experience - You could do Ohanas at the Poly & watch the fireworks from the Beach.

I am also a plain meat and potatoes person. I do not like sauces, etc. and really do not eat ANY condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayonaisse, etc.). HOWEVER, when we went to California grill I got the oak-fired beef filet and it was delicious. I truthfully could not even taste the tamarind BBQ sauce???? :confused3: But, they will leave it off if you ask for it.

I got the hearts of romaine appetizer and asked for the dressing on the side. It was basically a pile of lettuce!! But oh so yummy. The waiter didn't even bat an eye with my request.

I'm also a very picky eater, and love just plain food - and dh loves great dining experiences - so we booked Cal Grille last year - and loved it!!

I would say go for it!! Its a noisy restaurant, very sleek and modern looking, and I certainly enjoyed going out on the balcony and watching Wishes from there!! So much so our next trip dh wants to go back!!

The flatbread appy is plain food, we ordered some of that, and some Sushi (dh likes sushi!!) I tried a little of his, again, it was a wonderful experience and a lovely memory for us!!

Contemporary also has their Steak place next to Chef Mickey's too...

I often ask for sauces on teh side because some places just use too much. I've never had anyone care at WDW, or most anywhere else.

I'm with most the people here. I would not suggest eating at CA Grill. Outside of the beef filet, I don't think there will be much on the menu that would suit you. The beef filet itself, you may not like. That being said, it's probably not worth the view. I'm sure they could accomodate you, but in all fairness to the staff and kitchen, it's not something they would appreciate. It's one thing to sub a vegetable, but another to ask them to prepare something completley different.

It won't make up for the food, not IMHO. The fireworks from CG are nice, that's all. They are too far removed from the MK to be anything else. The food at CG, on the other hand is very good. But no way is it worth forking out $$$$ for food which they have made 'picky-eater-friendly'. Forgive my forthright view, but you may actually be taking a table away from a diner who would appreciate their food.

I agree, the view of the fireworks from the top of the Contemporary is OK, but definitely not spectacular. Wishes is really designed to be viewed from directly in front. Main Street would be the best place, but the beach at the Poly is closer to "center" than from the Contemporary. You literally have to look left and right back and forth to see the aerials and the low stuff around the castle.

On the other hand, CG has always been a great meal. I have read some discouraging reviews on here lately of the decline in food and service. Something we have not checked out for ourselves in a couple years.

If you like "plain" food...don't spend the $$$ on CG.

We went there for our wedding night dinner. The fireworks were nice, but certainly not worth the price of dinner.

The appetizer we had was pretty good (some kind of chicken flatbread or something). The salad was pretty basic, good, crisp and fresh...but basic. The main entrees though...well, let's just say we are plain food type people too! ;) :rotfl:

It was just my new DH and me...our tab was well over $100, we didn't even stay for dessert and had to find something to eat somewhere else afterwards

A lesson learned for us. :)

The CG is a beautiful restaurant and many folks LOVE the food there...it just wasn't for us and from your description, I think you might be disappointed.

Try checking out the menu at Narcoossee's--our friends who we went with last Oct are strictly meat and potatoes folks and they had steak (filet)--well done and "sauce-less" --and liked it.
And there is a fine fireworks view from Narcoosee's as well.
