Can you get the characters to leave someone alone?!

We are all going next year for my daughter's birthday and I was thinking of booking Cafe Mickey for the evening of her birthday. Howver, my dad can't cope with things like audience participation and he would be so embarrassed if the characters interacted much with him. I know it's all friendly and they don't show you up in front of people but I know he couldn't cope with it. However I would like us all to be there for her b'day so do you think the characters would pick up on someone not wanting to play and act accordingly, or I wondered if I could secretly do a 'please leave him alone' sort of signal! Or do you think that anyone is game?!

Is there a 'bah humbug' icon? :)

I don't think theres any message you could send to the characters tbh - but I do think they'll probably concentrate on the kids at your table rather than the adults.

from my experience the more you dont want them the more they come around. my mam is not into characters at all and they flock to her. i have no idea why, she doesnt mind too much and is used to it by now so she just gets on with it.

Maybe he could sit at the back where the characters couldnt get to him. Im sure once he saw the delight in your lil girls face he would get on fine.

Is he just embarrassed or afraid of looking daft? lol Goofy made me sratch him bum:rotfl: but know its just fun

Yes, I think he's nervous of looking silly. He wouldn't know how to react. When you say 'sit at the back where the characters can't get to him', do you mean the back of the restaurant or the back of the table? I ask because I would need to make sure that DS and DD *don't* sit in such a place, as they would want the characters to get to them!

You'll know when you get to your table at Cafe Mickey which is the "back" - basically the seats where the waiters etc are walking past, are the "front" seats at the table, this is also the path the characters take to get to you at each table.

Sorry to be dim but do you mean that every table in the restaurant *can* be on the character route by sitting at the front of the table but that also every table has chairs at the back where the characters can't reach you?

I just wasn't sure when you say front and back whether you mean front/back of the table or front/back of the restaurant, if that makes sense!

the characters will go to every table. some of the tables have a bench kind of at the back, so two chairs on the outside and two people sitting on the bench, if your are sitting in the corner they cant get to you without reaching across the table.

When we were there on DS's 3rd birthday, he was quite frightened at first but DD was pretty happy to see the characters and they concentrated on her, trying to encourage DS but at the same time knowing when to stop. The characters gave us the thumbs uop a few times to see if we were happy with what was happening and we gave it back so they moved on, I suppose your dad could do the same or just head to the toilet or go for food when they approach.

That's a great idea about heading to the loo, Jonny. And how nice of them to try to encourage your little one without pushing it. Thanks mommy2ash, I looked at some photos and it makes sense now! I seem to remember you joining these boards at about the same time I did a few years ago - we were both going on a trip at about the same time, I think? (I was without a PC for ages so have only just come back to this forum)

Just looked at your ticker - October 2008, yes that's when we first went (well, first time we went with kids, that is).
