So, I've had some tooth issues the last week and a half (very long story) and have been taking advil. I've weighed myself everyday for years now and have one of those scales that go to .1 lbs. the last week, I've noticed a slight increase in weight. not a pound a day, but like .3 lbs per day or something. Sure its the holiday, I've been eating, but I've started exercising again (mon - thurs) and yesterday did really good with what I ate, yet still gained .4 lbs. The only thing that is different is the advil. Is it possible that its making me gain some weight?

lol, you just answered your own question!! you just started to exercise!! that is why there is a slight weight gain! It has nothing to do with the advil. When you work out, you go thru a period thast yu gain muscle mass, so that is what is going on!!

Advil also causes me to retain fluids. I don't like taking it long term for that reason.

INTERESTING! I have been having a lot of pain in my side and taking Advil for it. In the few days I've done that I've also gained weight. Hummmm. This is th first time the scale has gone up in a long while, and thr first time I've been round the clock dosing on Ibuprofin. Now you've got me wondering!

Yes, it cqan cause temporary weight gain from fluid retention. I was just taking it (alternating w/ tylenol) for a bad tooth when my darvocet prescription ran out (root canal is not until 7/12), and I gained 5.5 lbs in 5 days! My legs and feet were so swollen! I have stopped taking it, and in 3 days 3.5 of that was gone. I ahven't weighed again, but I'm hping that the rest will be gone by Monday weigh-in.

I took a stonger prescription NSAID for my tennis elbow a few months ago, adn the same thing ahppened. 7 lbs in 10 days! It ahd taken me 4 months to lose 8 lbs, and 7 came back on in 10 lousy days! Once I stopped taking it, half of that went away right away; took a couple of weeks for the rest to go.

Slightly OT, but I find that Benedryl or Tylenol PM make me gain weight. I looked up Diphenhydramine, and it can be a "rare" side effect.

I don't take Advil on a regular basis, so not sure if it has the same effect. Sounds like water retention is an issue though.... interesting.

Looks like I'm sticking with Tylenol. ;)

Well, at least I know its not just me...if I would have known I would gain weight, I think I would have suffered thru the tooth pain and/or taken Tylenol. I am done with Advil as of today, and now I'm gonna exercise my butt off this weekend!
