Can you explain point transfers?

I understand the ins and outs of renting, but what do I need to know if I want to transfer points?

The member transferring their points to you cannot transfer points that they have banked or borrowed - so the transferred points must be from that member's current Use Year points transferred into your current Use Year. You, however, may bank points that are transferred to you if those transferred points are still within their banking window (first 8 months of their Use Year). You are only allowed 1 transfer per Use Year either of points into your account OR you transferring points out of your account to another member.

Transferred points retain their Home Resort status and Use Year - so they do not 'morph' into what your points Home Resort or Use Year happen to be - you may find it helpful, therefore, to find a member who has the same Home Resort as your points if you want to take advantage of 11 month priority booking window with both your points & the transferred points, otherwise, if the transferred points are from a different Home Resort than what you own you'd have to wait until 7 month booking window to combine them with your points.

You control transferred points so any reservations you make with these points are handled by you - it's not like when a member makes a reservation for you using their points where that member would still be the only person to call MS regarding that reservation.

The transfer happens virtually instantaneously - - you tell MS that you are allowing the member to transfer their points to your DVC account; it is usually accomplished via a conference call with MS.

Hate to be a downer on a day the stock market is doing well and there is some positive news about the economy but here it goes anyway.

What if after the points are transferred to you the person defaults on their membership and it goes back to disney? Would the points you paid to transfer go with it?

Good question ! Although I can't say for 100% I do think you would still retain those points transferred to you if the transfer happened before default; as I understand it once the transfer happens it is final ( the transferring member cannot get those points re-instated into their account ). Also, our member's planner book says for the transfer to happen both member's accounts ( both member transferring & member receiving ) must be in good standing so I'd think MS would see if an account has been flagged for some reason at the get-go for non-payment of loan, maintenance fees etc. and not allow transfer to take place.

Can't hurt to ask MS about this.
