I forgot about this!!! DH broke his hand and we are scheduled for the Segway tour next week.......bummer.

Anybody know if this will be a problem?

Thanks,

Babs

I don't know the official rules, but safety-wise, I think you have a problem. I know I never could have done the tour one-handed. (I actually had a few steering problems with both hands! :rotfl2: )

Yikes, I'd imagine that would be near impossible for your DH. He'd have to put a lot of weight on the broken hand to steer, as far as I can see, so I don't think it's advisable. My son broke his arm last week and is getting frustrated now at the limitations.

I'd say it depends on which hand is broken. The Segway steering is controlled via the LEFT handlebar. If he's got a broken left hand, this may be a problem. The right hand just needs to be able to maintain a slight grip to keep stable and be able to hold the shifting body wieght when leaning forward. It may be unpleasant, but a broken right hand may be doable. A broken left hand and you're out of luck

Oh that is a bummer! When were you scheduled? My girlfriend and I will be doing the Segway tour next tuesday. I've used a Segway before a long time ago. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure its your right hand that you use to turn right or left. More of a wrist action actually. Good luck either way!!

OOOOO, he broke the RIGHT one. So it is possibly doable??? We are scheduled for the Segway Around the World at 8:30 Wednesday, Sept. 6. He doesn't have a cast yet, only splints and wraps - that's what he gets for breaking boards.......... He is driving and still going to Tae Kwon Do so hopefully he can do this as well.....

Thanks for your help...

I would think that because of safety & insurance reasons, they won't let him ride. They make you sign a liability waver before you start, but I'm thinking they might say no. I wonder if you should ask first? Will you lose your money if you don't cancel? 407-WDW-TOUR.

Good luck, it is an awesome experience! :sunny:

Yep, in the end WDW will still make the final call of allowing him to ride.

The handlebars on the Segway are fixed (ie. do not move). You twist the left handle towards the 'left/counterclockwise' to go left, and twist clockwise to go right. If keeping pressure on his right wrist isn't too painful, he'll just need to keep holding on. No movement required from the right hand.

You could always just duct tape his right arm to the handlebar :thumbsup2

But as mentioned, WDW may be concerned about the liability issues

Good luck & hope his hands heals quickly! I'd probably call the tour number and see what they say ahead of time, it would stink if you arrived only to be turned away.
