Help! My mother was just diagnosed with celiac sprue disease, 3 weeks before our trip to the World. We're very thankful that we have found the cause of her symptoms, but now I'm wondering what and where she can eat! Does anyone have any suggestions for us?

Thanks!

Hi,
Go to www.wdwig.com and check out the article about guests' gluten-free experiences. There is also a list of foods that will be OK for your mom in each park as well as phone numbers to make prior arrangements at restaurants in the World. My 2 y.o. DS has a gluten, egg, barley and peanut allergy and he ate well while at WDW.

We recently travelled with someone who needed a gluten free diet....we ate at Spoodles and Wolfgang Puck's .....both were completely accomdating.....very well informed.....and the menu had alot of choices suited to the diet!

Yes! I've been to WDW twice with a friend who can't eat gluton or wheat products, as well as being lactose intolerant.

Here are some tips:

Bring along your own salad dressing, catsup, and soy sauce, as they do not have these in wheat/gluton free.

Call in advance to all restaurants and speak to the chef, they will accomodat you. At Italian restaurants they can have rice pasta with two days advance notice. All of the restaurants can also provide wheat/gluton free bread with advance notice.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. We did not have good experiences at Tony's or Palio. The Hoop De Doo Review was FABULOUSLY accomodating.

and she has no problems eating at WDW. It is best if you go to the restaurant of your choice several hours before you plan to dine there and ask to speak to a chef about the menu choices. They are very accomodating. We had a chef at LTT come out to our table and, with no prior notice, make a special dish for her (he even baked some rice flour biscuits for her). Last April, a chef at Boma took her around to every pod and pointed out every dish she could have, explaining what was in each. We also had a chef at the Trail's End buffet make her a few pieces of chicken without breading because she could not have the selections at the buffet.
We will be at WDW next week and I'm sure she will have no problems again.

The chef at 'Ohana had Tamari Sauce, which is a wheat-free soy sauce. I am sure that other restaurants in and around the World also stock it, so it doesn't hurt to ask. As far as I know, ketchup does not have gluten in it. My DS eats it with EVERY meal, LOL!

Thank you everyone. I am feeling much better about this. I have forwarded your helpful replies to my mom and she is feeling relieved too. WDW here we come!

It has wheat in the vinegar which is in it.

As the queen of allergies, I would highly recommend making as many PS as you can ahead of time to give a heads up. Once in the restaurant of your choice make sure that your server as well as the chef is aware of the food problem. Most chefs and wait staff are fantastic with this stuff, but I have had one or two bad experiences.
