Can you choose your use year?

If we buy DVC in Jan 09 will our use year start in Jan or can we choose a different use year, perhaps in March?

That they sell according to what they have allocated and open for sale. If you are buying I would think that you would get the choice if they had any open points for that use month.

There are no January Use Years.

The use year you get is not necessary the same as the actual month you make the purchase.

Use Year months are based on sales. Once all the sales for one use year month are completed, they start selling the next use year month. The actual months are tied to the actual buildings. For example buildings #1 and #2 might be February. Buildings #3 and #4 might be March.

Suppose they start selling buildings #1 and #2 in January. These would have February Use Year months. By mid January those buildings are completely sold. They would then start selling buildings #3 and #4, which would be March UY's. And so on.

Now, suppose they've got all building declared for the resort. If any units are unsold, then you could buy the use year month associated with that unit.

You can buy a specific use year if the buildings for that use year were declared.

When we bought a couple weeks ago they were assigning the UY Dec. I requested an Aug/Sept UY. They checked and I knew within 5 minutes whether it was available.

No promises because as they explained its by building and there is a method to the madness. However, it never hurts to ask! We did end up getting Aug and I was very excited!

but that doesn't apply to existing members purchasing add ons, right? If I have an Aug UY and add on, I will get an Aug UY regardless of what they are selling, right? (unless they've sold out of Aug UYs) What about new resorts? For example GCV, what if they haven't started selling Aug UYs when I purchase? If GCV opens as expected in Dec 09, will they future date me to Aug? How will that affect me being able to start using my points?

I've asked this question on the boards before, but still don't really understand how this will work. I could call my guide, but everyone here is so knowledgable!

Disney is usually selling to new purchasers a use year month that begins 3 to 4 months before the date of purchase. However, it will usually give you a different use year if you ask and there are points available for that one.

As to existing members, it always sells add-ons only for the use year month you already have unless you want to buy the minimum 160 that is applicable to new purchasers, in which case they will sell a different use year upon request. For new resorts whether you get past or only future points just depends. Example: they started selling AKV in Feb 2007 (it opened in July 2007) and they would not sell any 2006 points so you could only get Feb 2007 or after points with an add-on. Thus, if you had, say, an October use year they would give you points only come October 2007 and if you wanted to use them before Oct 2007, you had to borrow.

Just for reference, we just bought on Monday (3/3) and were given an August use year.

We were given Dec as ours this past Monday, should I suggest having it changed?

It depends on your vacation habits. Most times it does not matter. If you always travel a certain time of the year, a use year right before would work best because it would give you plenty of time to bank points if not used. If you travel all different times, it does not matter. I have an April use year and usually travel April/May or October/December. I have until November 30 to bank points.
