I am hoping someone with more experience at Univeral hotels with APH rates may be able to help. We currently have 2 rooms booked for the end of July at PB hotel with the APH rate. Unfortunately, we just found out that we have to leave one day earlier than planned. I tried to modify my reservation online but it said there were no rooms available. So, I called and the reservation specialist said they could not change my reservation because I would lose the APH rate and have to pay rack rate for the whole stay which is now double in price. When I explained the situation he told me I should be able to let them know at check-in that we have to leave early and then they would refund me the last night. He told me just to make sure I physically check out at the front desk the morning we leave. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I did this at RPR last year. Booked with an APH rate for 4 nights and needed to leave a day early. I had the same issue where I could not modify the reservation because the APH rate was no longer available. When I checked in, I asked if I could leave a day earlier. They let me do it and only charged me for 3 nights (instead of the 4 I had originally booked).

Thanks for sharing your real life experience

Usually the only way to resolve this is by talking to the hotel directly. Online reservationists really can only delete your current reservation and book a new one when you make a change. So if the new reservation with the AP rate doesn't exist, they can't change it.

Sometimes, it can resolve itself because new AP discounted dates will come up but more often, you have to contact the hotel. It's a real pain the way their system is set up but it has been like that for years. It is way easier to add a day than take off a day.

I did this in 2020 when the pandemic hit. We cut our trip short because at the time the Canadian Government told all people abroad to come back as soon as they could. And since the parks closed (we got the first 3 days in of our trip when the parks were still open) and then decided to head home on an earlier flight.

We went to the front desk (at RPR) and they checked us out early and refunded the remaining days. To note, we checked out at around 6:00 pm (had a 9:30 flight home) and we still got charged for that night, but had we checked out before 11:00 am then that night would also have been refunded.
