Can you check in a day late?

We are traveling with family and we are scheduled to arrive on the same day. We have separate rooms under separate reservations. One member of our group had something come up and may not be able to check in on Saturday as scheduled but may need to check in on Sunday.

Aside from the obvious loss of points, is there any issue with checking in a day late? Will they cancel the entire ressie if you do not check in on the first day?

I am thinking I can add myself to his ressie and check into the room on Saturday if necessary.

I appears from your signature that if you know that for sure today you could cancel that first day of the rervation today with no penalty if he is the only one in the room.. The idea of putting yourself or someone on the reservation that will be checking in on the Saturday will also work. You can get everyone's room keys that day and sort it out later. You could also call the resort and tell them the other person/people will be checking in the next day.

No matter what, don't just check in a day late with no notification to Disney. I'd be worried that the room reservation would have disappeared.

Definately advise MS about any late arrival. Ask for it to be noted on the reservation if you are making a reservation.

If it is a change after the confirmation has been sent, write down the date, time and CM name in case there is a problem. You might also want to call the resort on the original arrival date to confirm the late arrival. Again make a note of the call.

If you don't do something, I believe all of the points for the ressie will be forfeited and the ressie will be canceled. They're not going to just leave the ressie standing if noone checks in.

That would be a good option as long as there is no DDP involved. If he's getting DDP, you would have to get it too for all nights of the stay...even if that meant paying twice. Or you could cancel his DDP. If you're going to cancel his DDP, be sure you do it at least 3 days prior to arrival.

from the Vacation Planner...

if you don't arrive for any part of your stay, the Vacation Points associated with that reservation will be forfeited.

If you know they are not coming for the first night, cancel that night now. If you want to give it more time, be absolutely certain you cancel the day before and/or have someone check into the room. If you do nothing, the reservation is cancelled and you lose the points for the entire stay.

Having worked OKW and WL/VWL front desk, I can tell you the reservation will NOT cancel. When a reservation on points does not arrive it does in fact ride the system the entire time the reservation was booked for (hard to believe I know, but that is how DVC has it contracted with the front desk) Since the room is technically paid for it does not affect the hotel to ride the reservation. The only time that a reservation will be canceled is if the hotel is sold out or oversold and the room assigner calls MS to verify that you will not be arriving (which would mean MS would call you to verify before allowing the front desk to check out the reservation). The day late arrival happens often, because people want a clean room when they arrive, they don't want to wait until 4pm for their room (and is even more common with Exchange reservations).

With that said, I would still call MS and have them either note on the reservation the actual arrival date or add your name to the reservation so that you can check it in. I understand the thought behind canceling it now, but I also look at it in the aspect of, if you decide to keep it the room is ready when you arrive, you don't have to wait until 4pm... and the likelyhood of having rooms near each other are greater if the rooms are arriving on the same day.

Thanks for all the info.

I hate to waste the points but unfortunately we won't know until a day or two before arrival if his arrival will be delayed. I think I'll add my name to that ressie as well to keep that option open if I need it. Better to be safe than sorry.

I have another somewhat related question... if we have 4 people checking into a 2-bedroom with the dining plan, and 2 are showing up at 8AM and 2 are showing up at 4PM, what is the process?

I am the member, and we would be the ones checking in at 8AM. We have annual passes so no need to add the tickets to the cards, just the dining plan. The other 2 will need their tickets added as well as the dining plan, and will want to pay for their part of the dining plan then.

Is this possible? Will I get grief if all members of the party are not there at check-in, or is okay to have them show up later and get added?

Thanks!!
