Can you change a flat tire yourself or not?

My sis called here this am - she got a flat her husband is far away working -
DH went and changed it for her -
I changed my own years ago pregnant at that - I bet I could do it again - how about you???

No, I've never even had a flat tire. But I know I couldn't do it and I don't want to learn.

Also, I just found out that on my new Highlander, the spare is UNDERNEATH the car. Yeah, I can really see me crawling under the car in my dress.

yes, absolutely. When I got my first car, that was one of the things my dad insisted I learn. The other things were: how to change the battery, how to change the oil and how to add water to the radiator.

Yes, I have changed my own tires too.

I can.

My dad would not teach me to drive until I could:

Check and add oil to my car
Pump my own gas
Change a flat tire

Once I got my first car, he also gave me a AAA membership. :goodvibes He just wanted to make sure I'd know how if I really needed to.

There's a reason my DH pays for AAA!

but of course - my dad did all of the below as well!

Yep I can. My dad made sure all his girls go do that and change our oil and at least know what you were looking at in an engine. It's the best thing he taught me.

Sure can! In fact, I can change a tire A LOT quicker than Dh!

I can change a tire! My Dad made us learn how to change a tire, change the oil and know all the liquids of a car before handing us the keys. He wanted us to know what to do in a car crisis.

In theory I can...but do to the ingenious way the spare is suspended underneath my minivan...in reality I cannot. I need someone to remove it. You would think they would make it a bit more user friendly given the demographic who drives minivans.

I made certain that DW Sue could change a flat tire just for her (and my) piece of mind. I also had DS James change a tire during the period of time where he was learning to drive. I guess that it's about time to teach DD Sarah as she is only a couple of months away from getting her license. Yikes.

I also had to drive a stick shift.

Yep, I can. I used to be a service advisor in a car dealership so I can do quite a bit myself--more than DH, actually. Now, do I want to if I'm in a dress and high heels? Not particularly--in that case, I'd probably call for road service (it's covered in my warranty.) Plus, I hate taking the lug nuts off.

As far as know how I could but I don't think I have enough strength to get the nuts off.

Nope I have no clue. Last time I got a flat tire I drove to the nearest tire store and they fixed it for me.

I do however know how to check oil and add oil and I do pump my own gas.

For my husband, it's not a matter of "could" we change a tire, but instead a matter of "should" we change the tire. :)

Last April, we drove from Maine to Washington DC for Spring vacation. Just as we came off the Delaware Memorial Bridge we got a flat tire. We ran over some sharp object. Anyway, we pulled over and I figured my husband would hop out and quickly change the tire and we'd be on our way.

Well, he insisted on calling AAA to come out and change the tire for us. He figures we pay them every year for these services, so we might as well get some use out of our money.

Trouble was, it took them almost an hour to get to our car, then another half hour to figure out how to get the good tire out of the trunk, then another half hour to actually change the tire.

I told my husband I could have changed TEN tires and fired up the grill and cooked lunch in the time it took AAA to get out and change the tire!

No one, male or female, should be allowed to get their license without being able to change a flat tire, or drive a stick shift in my opinion.
