We were told that if we bring alcohol in our backpacks when we board, we would be allowed to keep it and not be charged for it. Is this true?

If so, is there a limit on the number of bottles/size/etc..?

Thanks Laine

Yes you can bring it on board.

The limit is one carry on bag per person, that needs to get through the security x ray scanner at the port.

Please do not put it in any checked in luggage as it could break ruin yours or other clothes and bags.

There is a corkage charge if you take a bottle into a main dinning room to be served.

Alcohol is permitted on board. However, be aware that any fragile items (including bottled alcohol) must be hand-carried on board in a day bag and/or carry-on bag, the dimensions of which cannot exceed 22" wide, 14" high and 9" deep.

Also note the following that is noted on the same page.
Please be advised: Disney Cruise Line reserves the right to remove fragile items (including beverages) from luggage. In such cases, items will be stored and returned at the end of the voyage. Beverage containers are considered fragile and have previously caused damage in checked luggage. All fragile items must be transported inside carry-on luggage

I have been on nine cruises. We have brought our own alcohol on board for the last several. Typically a bottle of vodka, rum and a bottle of wine. We typically carefully pack in our luggage. I try if glass to carry on but the rum is typically in a plastic bottle. Have not had a problem bringing in or taking what is left off. There are plenty of mixers that are free. We do also buy drinks onboard but obviously fewer

You may bring onboard whatever type of beverages you wish, as much as you wish as long as you carry it on. From the DCL website:
Q:May Guests bring alcohol onboard?
A:While adult Guests ages 21 and older may bring alcohol onboard, the following guidelines apply:

  • Alcohol brought on board may not be consumed in any lounge or public area.
  • Guests who arrive in the dining room with a bottle of champagne or wine that has been brought on board will be charged a corking fee of $20.00 per bottle.
  • Beverages must be packed in your carry-on bag—which must not exceed 22 inches wide, 14 inches high and 9 inches deep in dimension
  • Coolers filled with personal items (e.g. soda, alcohol, chips, candy, etc.) may not be brought on board.

Please note: Disney Cruise Line reserves the right to remove fragile items (including beverages) from checked luggage. In such cases, items will be stored and returned at the end of the voyage. Beverage containers are considered fragile and have previously caused damage in checked luggage. All fragile items must be transported inside carry-on luggage.

Have a great cruise.

For our 15 day cruise we brought a handle of Jack, a liter of Parrot Bay, a liter of Goose, 6 bottles of wine (that we chose to pay corkage on), and a bottle of champagne. We also carried on 2 cases of water, 12 cans of pineapple and pineapple/orange juice and 24 cans of rootbeer. We bought another handle of Jack in Cozumel. So yes, you can bring it on board as long as you carry it on. We put it in a hard sided roller and it was HEAVY!!! But oh so worth it! And don't forget your tumblers to hold said beverages. We got off the ship with a few almost empty liquor bottles with no issues.

According to DCL policy - which is posted above - all liquids(soda, water, alcohol) must be in your carry-on luggage. It does not matter if it is plastic or glass bottle, it should not be in your checked luggage. With the way they handle the luggage a plastic bottle can break just as easy as a glass one. Please follow the rules so that those of us who do follow them don't lose this privilege. I say this time and time again, I wish DCL would enforce their rules.

Please see above, now this is the current 'cruise booklet' issued by DCL for my upcoming cruise which we received a week back.

In it it clearly states, 'one carry on bag' per person, so it is limited as i mentioned in my first post to what a person can carry.

One carry on bag pp.

You may want to re-read your documents posted above. No where does it say limited to one carry on per person. It says: " A limited quantity of alcohol is allowed per guest (21 years of age and older) in carry on bags only"

That is the bit I had to hand, it is in there, just means I have to go back and scan in again which takes time. In an early section on carry on it says one pp,

I think you may be mistaken because even on the official DCL website there is no mention of one carry on pp. it only specifies that beverages must be in your carry ons and cannot exceed a certain size. DCL has never limited your amount of carry on luggage with or without alcohol. If you can carry it and it fits through the scanner, it can be brought on.

You are not limited to one carry on bag. You can carry as much as you like on board, however each piece must be able to fit through the scanner.

And you will be required to keep all bags with you til the rooms are available. So, you will have to consider how much stuff you are willing to lug around with you for a few hours.

My strategy.....
  • hit the buffet (Parrot Cay) when you board.
  • send one person just after 1:30pm to unload the carry-on's in the room once it's available. No more luggage problem. Love the wheels.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but the Terms & Conditions that you agree to when you book a DCL cruise states:

Each Guest may bring aboard the ship a reasonable amount of clothing and personal effects without charge, not to exceed 2 bags per person.
http://disneycruise.disney.go.com/terms-and-conditions/?country=us

Now, it doesn't specify that they are talking about "checked" bags or "carry on" bags, just that each person may not exceed 2 bags per person. That being said, In my time cruising with DCL, they have never limited anyone in either their checked or carry on bags. The only requirement held to is that carry on bags must fit through the scanner.

Can I carry on a suitcase of beer? Just by itself by the handle or does it need to be wrapped inside something?

DCL does prefer any carried on beverages be in something. I've seen them hand out black trash bags for people to use when they were just carrying whatever beverages they wanted in the open.

And the carry on needs to be able to fit through the scanner (22" X 14" X 9").
