Can we use this ticket?

I'm taking my son and a friend to WDW this week. We've been many times, but never had tickets left over, so I have no experience with non-expiring tickets. However, my son's friend was there in 2002 when he was 3, and has a ticket with one day left.

His mom gave it to me -- can I really use it for him? If so how? His fingersize obviously has changed since then. Also the name on the ticket doesn't match the one I gave at booking. It might be the right first name and the wrong last name, because Mom gave her name, and apparently WDW issued the tickets with the kids first name and her last name, whereas they're really her first name Dad's last name. When I made my reservation I booked with the other last name. Of course, he's 11 so he doesn't have any ID with either name. Or, since the actual tickets all seemed to have mom's name, it might actually be his brother's ticket (she had 2 that said her name and "adult" and two that said "child". She gave me one of the "child" tickets but there's no way to tell which had been used by which kid). Is it going to be a problem that it's a child's ticket and he's officially an adult?

If I use this ticket -- how do I do it? Can I have it added to his room key so he can do extra magic hours? Do I just go through the gate with the old KTTW it's on? Would it make more sense for me to just trade it in at the gate, where they wouldn't know that it doesn't match the name on his KTTW?

You should be able to go to the Guest Services (or Concierge) desk at your resort and have the ticket upgraded to an "adult' ticket. It doesn't have to be added to your KTTW card. You only need to show the KTTW card in order to take advantage of EMH -- not the actual physical admission ticket itself.

Or you should be able to go to Guest Services at any of the 4 parks and get the ticket upgraded to an Adult ticket. Disney does not penalize one for growing up. They should be able to see that the ticket was issued when the guest was 3 and now he's 11 by doing the math. And then issue a replacement ticket that can be used in the turnstyle.

That's the great thing about Disney, if you bought tickets back before the days when they came out with the new passes where you pay for them to not expire, Disney will still let you use these. My husband and I went about 10 years ago, and he had a pass from the early 80's. They still let him use it and did not charge for any price increase.

Are you getting a package or a room only reservation? If it is a package, everyone on the reservation has to have the same ticket (so he would have to have a purchased ticket too).

How long is your trip? If you have more than four park days planned, it might make more sense for him to continue to save the ticket since the additional days are pretty inexpensive after day 4.

Also, his ticket does not need to be on his key to use Extra Magic Hours. As long as he has his own valid room key for a Disney hotel, his ticket doesn't need to be on the KTTW.

We're room only, and only planning one park day, so the ticket is actually perfect for us.

I should add, however, that I often hear that you all have to have the same ticket for packages -- you don't. You just need to start with the same ticket, but you can update some and not others when you get there. We did that our first trip. My child was younger than my friend's child and they hopped some afternoons while we didn't. It was easy to add hopping to just some tickets after we got there.
