Can we talk about Garmins for a minute?

You know, the funny thing is that I started reading this on page 1 tonight and didn't realize it was a two year old thread and I was thinking, "Judy is just now starting to ask about Garmins?" :)

Oh Steve! :rotfl: You're a gem! :lmao: OMG! :rotfl2: That's too too funny! :rotfl:

I have the 201 and am happy with it as well. My only complaint with any of the Garmins (I would still recommend one) is when I use the Virtual Training Partner. For example, if I set it up to run a 1/2M, it will enter a target distance of 13.11 miles. I can then enter a target time, or a target pace. While running, it will tell me how far ahead or behind I am to finish at my targetr settings. Unfortunately, it stops when I the 13.11 mile mark. As you have noted, these races seem to be longer than the 13.11 distance, due to weaving, etc. So, when I finish, I don't have my actual finisih time; I have the time when the Garmin hit 13.11 miles. I like the Virtual Training Partner, but I wish it would run until I stop it.

Other than that, I love the 201, and it's really nice to upload the run information and see it on the PC screen.

I'm curious what everyone's garmin read mileage wise for the full. Mine registered 26.8 miles. i think the extra .5 was from weaving in and out of traffic. did anyone else have that kind of distance register after the race???

I have the Garmin 305. I use the heartrate monitor and I love it. DH trains for all his triathlons with a heart rate monitor so he likes to see what my heart rate is doing.

My garmin registered over 27 miles for the full but I did run backwards at least twice to get powerade for my girls. It took us a while to realize that they only had powerade at the first couple tables. We had been told to go to the end of the waterstops to get our powerade. A few of the midway waterstops were very poorly run and I actually had to stop and pour the powerade into cups! At least it was there.

The funny thing is that my heart rate was so low for the full. DH was amazed. He said "no wonder you felt so good, you were barely exercising" Yeah right honey I don't see you running 40 miles in a weekend.

Does anyone have the latest model, Garmin 405? If so, how is it working for you? I'm researching on getting one before the end of the year. Thanks!

I viewed and discussed the Garmin 405 at the Expo.

The only real function difference between the 305 and 405 is the multisport. 405 is running only. No biking or other.

If you plan on using the it for biking or tri's you will need to stick to the 305. According to the rep there was no plan to make the 405 multi-sport.

If you are just running.....it looked really cool.

Has anyone found the Garmin 405 forerunner on sale?

So far I've seen it online for $349.99 with free shipping for the 405 with heart monitor. And $299.99 with free shipping for just the 405.

I have pre-ordered a 405 from tigergps.com but it hasn't come out yet as far as I know.

I really wanted a 405 because it looked smaller then the others. However, I gave up waiting and cancelled my Amazon order.

I did go ahead and buy the 205. (Don't want the heart rate right now) I like it, but it is HUGE. So hopefully if the 405 is smaller and ever actually gets produced I can get it. (Maybe Waldo will buy it for me to motivate me LOL!)

Okay, as long as it's a bit slow here, let me ask a question. Anybody here going to get the Garmin Forerunner 405? What's the advantage of that model over, say, the 305 or even the 50? DOOD's eyeing one, and I'm curious for myself as well. (I don't know that I've earned one yet, but a girl can dream. :cloud9:)

I'm eyeing the new Garmin myself. A lot of my friends have the 201, the 205, and the 305. Too big and bulky, but the 405 is more of a wrist watch size. Less buttons as you "dial" the bezel to what you need to set or review.

Do a youtube.com search for video on how it works. It's been shown at expos and tradeshows, but they just haven't rolled them out yet.

I'm pretty sure there is no cable to upload or download info to/from your computer. There is a USBus doohickey, like a jump drive, that communicates with the unit to the computer. I do think you have to clip the unit to some sort of cord to charge the battery.

I am debating getting it with or without the heart rate monitor strap. I may wait a little while, to see if the price comes down. Also I want it in black, not the funky green they have. So don't anyone try to convince me that is WISH green, it snot (get it? :rotfl2: ).

I recall last year the 305 went on sale at Costco.com, with free shipping. And if you knew where to look, there was a $50 Garmin rebate coupon from the manufacturer. With the coupon, total cost was about $170. That was a steal for those who got it at that price.

So far, I've seen pre-sale sites that have the 405 for $299.99, and $329.99 with the heart rate monitor.

However, if you ask the Queen, she'll say "what do I need another toy for?" I already have a watch with a cronograph (stopwatch), and an Ipod with the Nikeplus chip and sensor. And I do prefer running with my tunes!
By the way Deb, I just looked at Robert's Disneyrunning.com site for the official Disney photos. The first and third place finishers are both wearing the Garmin 305, and the second place finisher is wearing an Ipod. Hmmmmm, is there any scientific research that proves having running electronics make you run faster?

I have the 201 and then I bought the 301 because I wanted heart rate. However, the heart rate info on that model is inaccurate to the point of being useless.
Does anyone know if Garmin improved the heart rate monitor on the 305 or 405?
The 201/301 is big and ugly, but so easy to read! And I've found it fairly accurate in the races I've done (except for the heart rate).

wow! that's a STEAL! LOL I got mine for $144 out the door...

To those who have ordered the 405 forerunner, did you order the one with out without the heart monitor? And, did you order black or green? Tracy, I went to tigergps.com and they have the green 405 for $299, available to shipment now. The black one is pre-order (I was just looking at the ones without the heart monitor). How easy would the 405 forerunner be for me to use when I'm not good at computers at all. Can't even post pictures like other people! I'm very electronically challenged, but I am interested in a Garmin. At the Minnie 15K last Sunday, I saw three ladies using theirs to walk 3 minutes and then jog 1 minute. Their Garmins had alarms to tell them when to walk and then when to jog. That's what I need.

To Garmin 405 or not to Garmin 405, that is the question???

My tax stimulus rebate just landed in my bank account. Hmmmmmmmmm?

I think I'll wait for the price to drop, in what, a year or two?

Debbie - If you only need interval alrms, you can do that with a TImex IronMan for about $30. If you want to add pace/distance to that, you could use a 201. No need to go with teh privcier one,s although the 305 and 405 are much smaller.

Whooo hoooo :cool1: I scored a brand new Garmin 405 w/heart rate monitor tonight. Someone had it posted online, and I was the first caller. Charging it up, and will break it in on Saturday. I lucked out and got it for less than the manufacturer's suggested retail price.

Yea!!!

I recently canceled my preorder for the 405 at tigergps and ordered the one from clevertraining. I got an email this morning saying it has shipped out. Shipping was free and I got the 3-6 days to ship to me. I did get the heart rate monitor just so I can see what is happening when I am doing my faster pace miles and I am huffing and puffing. I just want to make sure that I am not overdoing it heart wise. I am getting the 405 to replace my trusty 205. I think the 205 is great but love the fact that the 405 is smaller.
I will give my 205 to my mom as she is thinking of walking the 5k durnig WDW marathon weekend.
