Can we pick a lower grade car?

We have booked a full size 7 seater SUV with Alamo next month and I am slightly worried about what vehicle we will get If there is nothing suitable can we take a minivan instead. I wouldn't be asking for a refund for the price difference.

I know I could downgrade to a minivan before we arrive but as I drive a large 4x4 at home I would fell more comfortable driving something similar in the US, especially as I will be on the "wrong" side of the road for us.

Thats one of the Bad thing about rentals .

Anytime you make any changes they can charge you full rate for the new rental agreement. With a last minute I'm sure that would be big.

It never hurts to ask and getting the correct gate agent makes all the difference.

I'm sure you can downgrade your vehicle when you get there. We had to upgrade ours, because we originally booked a 7 passenger minivan (5 people & 1 carseat) but had to upgrade because of the amount of luggage we had! So we ended up with a suburban (huge 4x4) which was extremely confortable, but make sure you look at the estimated charges, because it was late when we arrived and I did not really read the estimated upgrade charge and was shocked when we returned the car (cost us $1400 MORE!) I would have rented 2 vehicles instead of the one truck for this cost increase. You should read the estimated charges and if you downgrade you would be entitled to money back (which will probably cover insurance/other costs of the rented vehicle) so you may break even.

I don't think Orlando rental agencies are able to keep inventory exact but a lot of customers won't want a free "upgrade" to a 7 seater SUV. Allowing you to downgrade could be an issue if a customer with a min-van reservation doesn't want the upgrade. I'm not even sure if all the credit card company coverages apply to large SUVs

As of last week, Alamo/National did have several Highlanders on the SUV line; not the only thing there, but there were Highlanders. They used to have nothing but GM models, but last week I was thrilled to see a fairly large number of Toyotas added to the fleet. (I'm not a fan of GM.)
