I posted a while back about driving for 16 hrs for labor day. Well, we have paid our deposit and now my father doesn't want us to drive so he has offered to buy our airfare for us. Has anyone done this before. Can this be done online?

Yes, the tickets have to be in each of your names but the method of payment can be any means. Your dad must be the one making the arrangements.

You may want to check with the airline. For some you have to show the credit card used to purchase the tickets when you check in. I'm not sure if that's just for e-tickets or for all. I would just have your dad let them know he will not be flying with the group even though he is paying. They can let him know what needs to be done if anything. What a great gift!

Most airlines have done away with the credit card requirement, but it always pays to check before buying the tickets. If the airline you want requires the card used for purchase to be shown, then you can do what's called a pre-paid ticket. The airline will let you know what to do to get that kind of ticket.
