Can we bring bottled water onto the ship?

Are we allowed when boarding the ship to bring our own bottled water? I've read how there are some restrictions on alcohol, but I can't find anything about water. I'd just like to bring a bottle or two to keep in the room. If they are sealed would it be okay?

Yes, you can bring water, soda, etc. The only restriction is that you must carry it on board yourself.

Yes, we do it every cruise. We just dedicate a rolling carry on size suitcase for waters and snacks. Then when the cruise is over, we have an empty suitcase for souvenirs or dirty clothes.

May I ask, why you need to bring your own bottled water? The water onboard the ships is processed the same as most bottled water (reverse osmosis and filtered). We just bring our own refillable water bottle onboard and fill up in our room, or at the drink station.

Where in the room do you fill it? Right from the sink? Just trying to determine what we will need for water. Bottles may come in handy if you want to carry around something disposable though.

Yes, right from the sink. All the water onboard (whether it's for preparing food, making ice, showers, from the drink station) is all processed the same. We just fill up from the sink in the bathroom and usually keep it in the refrigerator to make it colder. And we have wide mouth bottles, so we can just put ice in the bottle, if we wish. Saves on plastic waste.

I have to chime in here.... I am not a fan of the waste caused by bottled water, but I have noticed that on our three cruises (and at Disney World FWIW) I have refilled my reusable water bottle at the soda stations using the "water" tab. Each time, I have developed a sour stomach that got worse as our vacation progressed. Not sure what else to call it. Maybe I am just sensitive but if you think about it, they are really recycling waste water so not sure if that's a great option for everyone. Water is different everywhere; I have had issues on other vacations (in the US) as well. Out of the country drinking bottled water, I always seemed okay. We brought bottled water to the WDW parks last time bc of this, and I am considering doing the same for our next cruise. I think it's just a personal preference/issue.

actually, your own reused bottle may be the culprit...
unless you seriously sanitize it between uses, you can get bacterial growth inside the bottle that can affect your stomach..

I would agree except most of the time I am using paper cups! I should have clarified. If I reuse a bottle it is normally the bottled water one that I just refilled. And it is a travel cup that I do wash out, not an actual bottle. So it is definitely the water, for me at least.

Anytime I think of water being "cleaned" I have to stop...Of course, what is used for the base of soda, juices, etc? Water must still be safer :) Coffee and wine for me!

I'm pretty sure it's not recycled waste water. I believe they do process sea water and they take on water in ports.

They have a pretty intricate diagram on one of the walls (on deck three maybe?) on how they process the drinking water. It is nonpotable water that they recycle, for sure!

I haven't seen the sign but I will look for it on my next cruise, but I believe nonpotable water is recycled for the laundry, not drinking.

There is a thread on cruisecritic.com, with a reply by a chief engineer with 38 years experience that explains the water systems.

waste water is typically recycled for cleaning and laundry, things of that nature - not for drinking...

This is from a random cruise website:

"Fresh water is vital to shipboard operations. It allows passengers to bathe and stay hydrated, and it’s used to prepare food, sanitize kitchen tools and surfaces, wash linens and clothes and clean engine room equipment as well as staterooms and public areas.

Fresh water comes from two different sources: produced water (seawater that is either evaporated and re-condensed or produced by a reverse osmosis plant and treated with minerals and chlorine); or bunkered water, which is purchased from port communities and stored in designated potable water holding tanks. We bunker water from ports where we know water is plentiful, high in quality and costs less than the fuel needed to produce water onboard."

I know water is different from town to town, even in the state I live in, let alone from a different country. I guess I am just sensitive to the differences; composition, additives, different bacterium present, etc. For whatever reason, I seem to be sensitive to the water on board; just a personal observation. I wish I wasn't bc bottled water is expensive!!

I wanted to bring bottled water mostly for the room. I drink a lot of water and if I wake up in the middle of the night I don't want to call room service to get some. Plus the idea of drinking out of the sink weirds me out even if it is all safe to drink.

Why do you care the poster didn't ask about the ships water just if they could bring bottled water on. Some people don't like the ships water but you always want to lecture them on how good the ships water is it sucks in my opinion no matter what process is used

I only asked, because many new cruisers are not aware that, for most of us, the water onboard is fine. Just wanting to lighten their load of "stuff" they feel they might need to bring onboard.

I'm sorry if it sounded like I was lecturing. I was only providing information.
